In case you haven't seen it ........................

Genes Advisor 28 Feb 2013 12:58

Hi Everyone,

We wanted to make you aware of some changes we have made to the way we store your log in information. Your privacy and security is of the utmost importance to us which is why we have made some enhancements to the way we store your details, ensuring that they are saved securely and safely. Recent changes include the encryption of your password which means that we have encoded your information in such a way that, should hackers ever try to access our database, they would be unable to read it.

These changes should not effect you in any way, unless you have multiple accounts that you log in to using the same email address. We have taken the decision to no longer allow multiple accounts using the same email address in order to make sure that your details are available to you and only you. If you have multiple accounts that you would like to continue using, you are able to do so, but you will have to choose which account you want to use each time you log in. If you would like to close down one of your accounts, please contact [email protected] and they will be able to do this for you.

These changes will take effect on Tuesday next week.

Thanks Sylvia.

I'm glad you always alert members to what's on the
Announcement board.

Wish GR would get the message and let their members know themselves.

Gai - I am a little confused about your comment about letting members know themselves

It is there plain and clear on the Announcements board ( have just looked )

If members (me included) choose not to read the Announcement boards and rely on the kindness of Sylvia to inform us of new information then surely it is down to our own laziness and lack of interest in that part of the board and not Genes fault.

I know that they make many important Announcements on this part of the board but choose not to bother looking there, surely then the fault is with me and not Genes. :-D

PP you have missed my point.

When the Announcement board first appeared on GR. when a new posting was added by GR on the board the word NEW used to appear next to the title.

In one of GR upgrades this was either deleted or overlooked. Despite requesting that GR put back this form of notification for members, GR still haven't.

GR are lucky to have wonderful members like Sylvia who do GR's job for them.

Edit: PP, I just checked the thread that I posted about the Announcements Board and you were the one that told me about the word NEW appearing on the board title.

To be honest I cannot remember what I posted a few days ago let along in the past. They used to put the 'new' there, had not really taken a great deal of notice as it is not a board I look at

In the main I use only 2 of the boards, the General Chat and the Genealogy Chat and only occassionally look at Finding Ancestors.

But as I am now waiting to see if my subs go up I will in all probability not bother with this site anymore, not much going on at all lately. :-D

PP I am neither lazy nor not interested - but do not have the time to read all on Gene's each day.

Thanks Sylvia in Canada

Thanks Gina, and Gai

I started doing this hoping it might be a push for GR to post such announcements on ALL the Boards.

I know most people don't read Announcements .................. I didn't myself.

Then I would see someone else mention some change that was happening ........... and they would say they'd seen it on Announcements

It so happens that I have GR bookmarked to open on the Discussion Board Summary page, and so it was easy to begin to watch Announcements.

In the early days, last year, that was very easy because NEW would appear next to it when a new posting was made by GR

That now doesn't work ....................

Instead, I now keep an eye on the number of threads showing .............. if it increases, I take a look

I'm selective .................. I only pass on information about changes that affect members on site.

PP,

it's a shame that so many members have left GR and I hope you stay on.

Will not find out for about another fornight - then I have to decide.

I feel I can justify to myself the 'old' payment just for the use of the boards, but £20.00 is a bit steep.

I probably will not leave but will feel guilty in remaining, but hey ho its my money and I will waste it as I see fit (as will the rest of our income!!!!)
:-D
