Yes I have come across Emma but have not completely tied her in.
Became very confusing when I was searching for John who was Israel.
Now need to lay it all out and stand back and look.
I am lucky to have among all this confirmed a photo that I have is John ( Israel )and Mary Webster.
Was then through a connection sent a photo of his brother James Freestone and family

Flip Report 30 Mar 2013 12:02

Do you have this?

Emma Powers
Spouse Name: John Freestone
Marriage Date: 21 May 1851
Marriage Place: Tasmania
Registration Place: Launceston, Tasmania
Registration Year: 1851
Registration number: 817

Looks like he married a fellow convict. Emma was deported in 1843 along with what is likely to be her mother Elizabeth. Both tried together for larceny, both with previous convictions.

Flip Report 30 Mar 2013 11:45

Seemed a harsh sentence, but he had a previous offence, was given 3 months for larceny:

John Freestone
Age: 48
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796
Date of Trial: 2 Jan 1844
Trial Year: 1844
Location of Trial: Wiltshire, England
Sentence: Imprisonment
Crime: See Image
Date of Execution or Release: See Image

Have found my Israel Freestone born 1835 in Westbury to a
John Freestone born1796 and Mary Huttley born 1801
They married 1820 Mary died 1843
Seems like something went wrong and
John Freestone born 1796 was sentenced to 10 years and transportation to Van Dieman's Land in 1845 for stealing potatoes, a shovel and a bucket.

I have assumed that Israel followed his father to Tasmania

The Cornwall Chronicle (Launceston, Tas. : 1835 - 1880) Saturday 3 January 1857

There's a full list of passengers arriving on the "Alice Walton" from Liverpool and one of them is an Israel Freestone.

Nothing corresponding on the shipping lists on ancestry but there is this:

Tasmania, Australia, Passenger Arrivals, 1829-1957

Name: Isaac Freestone
Arrival Port: Launceston
Arrival Date: 30 Dec 1856
Departure Port: Liverpool
Departure Date: 30 Sep 1856
Ship: Alice Walton
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Devonshire
Birth Year: abt 1835

He was aged 21 and an agricultural labourer. He was sent out on the application of Jno Freestone (but this was amended to John Thomson).

Perhaps a relative?

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 9 Mar 2013 09:21

I think maybe Cook means they emigrated in the 1850/60's rather than were born then? Otherwise the dates don't match at all (especially with a surname like Gloag).
There's another Mr. Freestone on the ship 'Castle Eden' arriving in 1851.

Jonesey Report 9 Mar 2013 09:17

His arrival in Tas possibles:

Name: Mr Freestone
Arrival Port: Hobart
Arrival Date: 9 Dec 1855
Departure Port: Sydney
Departure Date: 6 Dec 1855
Ship: Tasmania

Name: Mr Freestone
Arrival Port: Hobart
Arrival Date: 19 Jan 1882
Departure Port: Sydney
Departure Date: 16 Jan 1882
Ship: Southern Cross

Launceston Examiner Tuesday 19 December 1882

Deaths
FREESTONE. At her residence, Prospect Villlage, Ellen, the beloved wife of Israel Freestone, aged 56 years.

Funeral Notices.
The funeral of the late Mrs. ISRAEL FREESTONE will leave her late residence, Prospect Village,on Wednesday, at two o'clock, arriving at Prospect Burial Ground at half-past two.

(from Trove http://trove.nla.gov.au)

Ages don't tie up with the info from Cook - this Ellen was 56 in 1882 so born around 1826, surely she wouldn't have been that much older than her husband. Dates need to be revisited.

This is the possible marriage of the Israel that Jonesey refers to:

Jonesey Report 9 Mar 2013 08:57

Some dates for the marriages and perhaps his father's name from the marriage certificates might have helped.

There was only one Israel Freestone recorded in the 1861 census of England. He was born in 1860 but cannot be the person you seek as that Israel Freestone died in Lambeth, London in 1897.

There was this one recorded in 1851 but his birth date does not tally with what you believe.

1851:
Name: Israel Freeston

Relation: Lodger
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Westbury, Wiltshire, England

I have found a Helen Gloag arriving in Launceston in 1856 and it's a pretty unusual name.

cookie4416 Report 9 Mar 2013 08:25

I am looking for Israel Freestone born around 1850/60 who went to tasmania Australia and married Ellen Gloag and they had a daughter Hannah.
Hannah married Stephen Monaghan and had two sons

Israel remarried to a Mary Webster after Ellen died and changed his name to John Freestone
