Brick wall for Thomas Moseby/Mosby - Help!

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Carol Report 9 Mar 2013 16:57

1871 and 1881 censuses state Thomas Mosby born 'Scotland'. 1861 says born 'Fawdon Square, Northumberland'. Can find no trace of birth record in either Scotland or England. Born approx 1830. Married Eleanor Cresswell 1854. Died 1909. One of his sons Edward Moseby (with an 'e' ) was my maternal great grandfather.
Tearing my hair out. Can anyone help? (Not to tear my hair out!)

Thanks,
Carol

Four Public Family Trees on ancestry all seem to accept that Thomas was born in Scotland in 1830

Three have an exact date .................... 15 January 1830 .............. but no documentation to show where they got this information from

One of the trees has exact information on the marriage to Eleanor PLUS the name of a father Thomas Mosby

25 Dec 1854
to Eleanor Creswell
Description
St Edmunds Chapel, Gateshead, Co. Durham

maybe I am assuming too much in assuming a) this person has obtained the marriage certificate, and b) obtained the name of the father from said certificate.

Just to point out why you can't find an official birth record

In England and Wales, the GRO index didn't start until Sep 1837 and even then it wasn't compulsary until about the 1870's.

In Scotland, I *think* the index was started in 1855.

On either case, you'll need to go down the parish record route

It might be best to purchase a copy of the MC - the father's name (also Thomas?) and his occupation ought to be listed. The witnesses might be related to Mos(e)by side.

Is this the marriage?

Marriages Dec 1854 (>99%)
Creswell Eleanor Gateshead 10a 700
Musby Thomas Gateshead 10a 700

As you probably already know, order at a cost of £9.25 from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Use the spellings as shown, not what you believe them to be otherwise gro may not issue it. Using Eleanor's might cause less chance of rejection

Thanks guys for your quick responses and for trying to help.

I have copies of the 1881, 1871 and 1861 censuses with the info you have given me. I also have copy of marriage cert. for Eleanor Creswell and Thomas Musby which states that his father was also called Thomas. The witnesses are Eleanor's father and a Mary Hale which means nothing to me.

If, as I believe, Thomas the father was born circa 1803 and Thomas the son was born 1830, I still can't find any trace of either of their birth records.

I have found Thomas Mosby as a widower and a boarder aged 60 on the 1891 census which ties in with the 1830 birth. I also have a copy of his death cert. saying he died on 8.2.1909 aged 71 in Bill Quay (where my maternal grandmother was born). This, however, would put his birth year as 1838. The informant on this death certificate was Edward, his son and my great grandfather.
