elizabeth monk was born 27/09/1882 in preston lancashire

parents john monk and catherine (nee bulger)

the family is missing on 1891 census but i know they were in preston because several children were born there

they are in liverpool on 1901 census under MONKS with john monk and catherine and the children including elizabeth monks

that is the last record of elizabeth i can find

i have spoken to a relative who says she was married at least twice and went to america and came home again but i can find nothing

monk/s is a common name in lancashire there is even another elizabeth monks born 1882

my family is a travelling family and elizabeth was a hawker

if anyone can help with finding her after 1901 i would be very very grateful

Elizabeth Boswell
Arrival Date: 26 Nov 1904
Birth Date: abt 1882
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: English
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York

Travelling with Thomas Arthur, and Margaret Boswell (who I think is 7, but image bad) - he states his nok as mother Edith Boswell but I can't read her address.

Added: Sorry, mother should read Edith Grover, of what looks like Westhaven, Conneticut. And the child Margaret is age 1 not 7.

I've just noticed, you have changed from Elizabeth to Margaret??

"my relative says margaret went to america and then came home again and she had at least two marriages"

Is this a mistake or is it the daughter (on passenger list previously posted) you are referring to?

Flip Report 11 Mar 2013 07:48

The age is 2 years out, but I think this is him:

Thomas Arthur Boswell
City: Bronx
County: Bronx
State: New York
Birth Date: 6 Mar 1884
Race: White
Draft Board: 20
Age:

Occupation: Ship fitter/furnace man

Nearest Relative: wife Elizabeth Boswell

Height/Build:

Colour of Eyes/Hair:

Gives an address of 66 W177 St, Bronx New York - but it isn't a good image so I may be wrong.

I'm assuming they must have returned as there is this christening:

John Arthur Boswell
Birth Date: 31 Aug 1906
Baptism Date: 6 Sep 1906
Parish: Liverpool St Jude
Father's Name: Thomas Boswell
Mother's name: Elizabeth Boswell

Father's occupation is boilermaker

david

david Report 11 Mar 2013 10:07

yes they did return to england

her name is elizabeth monk NOT margaret (my mistake)

this definitively sounds like them

am i right in thinking thomas boswells mother was in america ?

my relative says elizabeth was married twice

what a lot of information and so quick

whoopee !!

david

david Report 11 Mar 2013 10:14

when i heard the name "boswell" i assumed he would be a "traveller"

the MOMKs were a travelling family and they usually married their own kind

elizabeth was a hawker and her father a horse dealer/earthenearsdfealer/hawker

david

david Report 11 Mar 2013 10:18

thomas arthur boswell seens to have been brought up by his grandparents if thomas' mother was in america this would explain things

Flip

Flip Report 11 Mar 2013 10:28

Although I haven't found her re-marriage, I think this is his mother travelling to Boston:

Edith Grover
Arrival Date: 19 Feb 1892
Birth Date: abt 1864
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: English
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England; Queenstown, Ireland
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Britannic
Search Ship Database: Search the Britannic in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database

With her is Mary Grover (5) and Daniel Grover (6 months)

david

david Report 11 Mar 2013 13:22

Edith Grover going to america with two small children (with no husband)

why isnt she called boswell ?

thomas arthur boswell aged 10 stayed with his grandad

thomas arthur boswells father george must have died

this is sooooo interesting

Flip

Flip Report 11 Mar 2013 13:33

I think George Boswell died in 1886 in Hampshire (age 25), it's possible but I can't be sure as it doesn't give his middle name - the only real clue is the shipyards - he was a boilermaker and likely worked in the shipyards - Thomas Arthur was born Barrow in Furness, again a shipyard town.

Edith's daughter was Mary Louisa, ch Liverpool 1885 and according to parentage would be Thomas's full sister. Son Daniel was reg in Sept 1891 as Grover, but I can't see any of them on the 1891 census. Nor can I see Elizabeth/Thomas going back to America.

No luck in finding any of them on the US federal census either.

Any luck with a re-marriage for her Ann? I can't see one England/Wales.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 11 Mar 2013 15:26

I couldn't find one either under the name Boswell or Williams

The only Daniel Grover I could find was registered in Wandsworth in 1891 but could not see a matching Mary

Flip

Flip Report 11 Mar 2013 15:44

Yes Ann, that's the birth I think is right for Daniel, this is the christening for Mary:

Mary Louisa Boswell
Baptism Date: 13 Dec 1885
Parish: Toxteth St Silas
Father's Name: George Edmond Boswell << Plater
Mother's name: Edith Boswell

Address 6 Alder Street
