Good idea would be to read the boards to see what sites are available for research. Also to give you an idea of how to word any request for help.

Always start with what you know and not family stories.

Helpers can give loads of info but you always need to buy the certs to confirm that information

Also to be frustrated

Family do not always use their proper or full names

One example - baptised Charles Joseph but registered as Joseph Charles. Sometimes on census as Charles and others as Joseph.

Having an unusal middle name does not always make the search easier as one of my lot hated his middle name so much he crossed it off his birth cert when about 12 years old.

.. always begin with known facts, work back from what you know to be true

.. don't take family stories to be gospel, may be some truth but often distorted

.. be prepared to buy some certificates, needed to confirm theories

.. never ever believe what's on other people's trees, unless 100% documented (and then still check)

.. ask us whenever you're needing help
