Birth Certificate Query

Adopted could also mean that the child was adopted within the family.

eg. If the natural mother married someone, the stepfather might want to adopt the child, so then the couple together adopt the child who is the natural offspring of the mother.

Kemp, Did they know their birth name - if they did, what stopped them sending for the cert?

It means the child had gone through the adoption process into another family,,,,,,

- Mother was unmarried (or at least not to the father) and the natural father did not acknowledge the child

-'Adopted' is a notation of just that. The Child was adopted by another person and in all probability had their name changed.

The Adoption register is only open to the registered birth parent (I think) and the adopted child, not to anyone else. Because of this, you won't be able to find out their 'new' name.

If you are a relative, you could add your name and their birth name to the Adoption Contact Register in the hope that the 'child' is looking for their birth family, but other than that, there is not a lot you can do.

Have a look at the information given by GR on the Find Living Relatives board, and the stickied threads on there.

Just received a birth certificate from 1950s, no father, mother stated. Column 9 Signature of registrar Hillian Faith. After Colume 10 says 'Adopted' signed by SuperIntendent Registrar Kenneth Pearce. Any ideas on this practice? Does this me the child was to be adopted or was adopted?
