Elaine, Christina and Janna

................ on behalf of myself, and the other helpers .................

thank you for the thank yous :-D

We all enjoy helping!!

I think one reason we might be faster than you is that we do not use the GR records ................... I think that applies to all the helpers.

We all have subs in other sites, and have also found free sites while doing our own researches.

Most of us joined GR before the site carried any records, and didn't need to upgrade in order to use them after that happened.

Most of us also still find other sites much better, and see no point in upgrading.

Most of us only have the Standard membership .................... and often only because we want to be able to post on the Boards, thus allowing us to keep up with friends, and to help others.

Don't you think the problem is the public promotion of Ancestry by name or request of search from Ancestry that is the issue. It is another commercial company and competitor. GR does have it's own set of records.

I can't see the problem if helpers find stuff without naming the source of the info. ;-) ;-) ;-)

If GR decided that Paul's thread should go because he asked for an Ancestry
lookup then so be it.

But it should be up to GR to monitor the boards themselves and not rely on the
board police.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 2 Apr 2013 09:54

Paul's thread, if memory serves, was to let other's know that the other site had free access to records this past weekend.

When it was posted, it was believed to be *all* records, although it later transpired to be for 1901 and 1911 census. The free access was until 01 April so it's over now.

Absolutely, NanaSue.

e.g. " Please refrain from advertising any businesses, competitor or other, on the Genes Reunited Message Boards.

and

Please do not use the service for any business or commercial or charitable purpose, or to promote any alternative commercial service."!

And it is not just that alternative competitor services are promoted, there is also the likelihood that some members keen to berate GR's record service have never had any direct experience of it, so any opinions they might have are based on hearsay.

Gai, it might well be the case that in an ideal world GR should monitor the boards but the fact is they don't.

"Remember, these boards are provided by us, but not controlled by us. We do not pre-screen or actively monitor material contributed by Members and are not responsible for the behaviour or conduct of Members or the content they post on the site. We trust our Members to point out anything that does not conform to these guidelines by using the 'Report as Abuse' button."

Gai Report 2 Apr 2013 10:03

IGP,
As I see it GR don't need to monitor the boards because the board police
does the job for them.

A refreshing comment - InspectorGreenPen seems to the only person to get it.

Quoting Estelle

" It is fine to mention other sites with regards to look-ups, especially if you have found something on there that could help someone.
What we don't accept is the following:
1). People asking questions about Ancestry (or other sites) - how much it costs, and that type of question.
2). Derogatory comments about our site in comparison to other family history sites. "

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 2 Apr 2013 12:50

But surely a thread telling us about free access to another site isn't making a cost comparison, just finding something on there that could help someone?

Elaine Report 2 Apr 2013 14:54

I have a subscription on GR and one on Ancestry, together with Family Search, and Rootschat and Rootsweb for my Irish enquiries!!(some are free)....I find that I have to go from one to another,as each offers something different.

I agree Christina...we are all after the same thing in the end>to find out as much as we can about our ancestry(sorry,no pun intended!),and anyone who can point me in the right direction is ok by me.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Apr 2013 19:37

Threads have been posted many times in the past notifying GR members of free time on other sites ...............

and there has been no problem. The threads have not been removed.

GR only acts when someone reports such a thread, so it is Board Police who are taking it upon themselves to report.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Apr 2013 20:15

I have reported threads on occasions in the past .........................

for obscene comments

for racial or sexist derogatory comments

for personally offensive comments, directed at me or at someone who is unable to respond.

I firmly believe that no other postings should be reported ........................ anything else is fair comment, whether it be in a discussion, an exchange of ideas OR in the reporting of access to another site.

All matters of contravention of T&C's should be the responsibility of GR NOT members of GR.

What sort of things do others on here report???????????????/

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Apr 2013 20:18

I was interested in a documentary I heard on the radio about a new "job" in the internet world.

The "job" has become very popular with people who spend lots of time on the internet; those who have nothing else to do with themselves; and with students and others with some spare time and wanting to earn extra money.

It is ........................ moderating internet sites.

The researcher said that Yahoo, Twitter, FB, and "many" other social media sites utilise this service. GR counts as one of these

People willing to do this "job" sign up with one of a number of organisers.

A post that is reported on any site using it is steered to the "organiser", who then directs it to one of the signed up people.

The person reviews the post, and acts "accordingly".

Basically ...................... while these reviewers are SUPPOSED to act in accordance with each site's specific instructions and T&C's, the radio researcher found that this did not happen in many, if not most, cases.

Reported posts were subject to the whims of someone doing the "job" for a very short period of time.

I was told 3 or 4 years ago by GR that they used a "well-respected company of moderators who were well trained in moderating" ........

....... ie, even then, they did not use in-house staff.

so ................ ???????????????
