As a result of something that happened on the boards. I looking for other free geneology chat sites that offer support. I don't want anybody to leave GR but sometimes needs must.

I know about http://www.rootschat.com/ - I personally registered several years ago.

I have been looking for others that are free before responding. Can anybody please advise :-D :-D :-D :-D

I would imagine something like 90% or more of regulars here also use, or have used Rootschat.( it's very useful in terms of worldwide name searches) Most of the other 'best' free sites that offer support are frequented by ex and current GR members.

There may be others of course, I just haven't found any helpers better than GR helpers, whether they still use the boards here or have taken their expertise elsewhere.

Personally I'm not going anywhere- you have to just put up with me - I'm only interest in recommending free sites. :-D :-D :-D

Well, do the RESEARCH.....

But don't be too confident about our 'having to put up with you'..............

Haven't you ever noticed the thread by Joy on this board?

Lots of free and useful site links on here.

The research and chat boards on here are the best around!

bye bye bye bye bye

Hope thats not a link to another site --------------

contravenes T&C

thought you would know that

given the amount of times you have criticized others

Perhaps genealogical research can resume once again

GR on Facebook? Ancestry on Facebook? Curious Fox? Rootschat? You only have to google. I wouldn't recommend one over another, all have their strengths depending what one is looking for. Of course it's always possible to start ones own, as some have done successfully.

I always suggest

GOOGLE

Rootschat is a great Forum board.

I like it because I can go to specific boards for specific queries

I have used the WW2 and county boards on there and have had a fantastic repsonse.

Many on the WW1 & 2 boards are guys who are not necessarily doing family research, but a just interested in the wars (not just those 2).

Me I like the boards on here just for chat, but for research I often use both.

as others have said, I have found GR to be the very best for helpers

not because I am a helper .................

but because I have ASKED for help, and the help I have received has been superb, beginning with my first request back in 2004 and continuing to this day

Not all my requests have been solved, but there have always been replies, suggestions for possible solutions ................... and all, always, most politely done.

It is interesting to note that most of the helpers use other sites ...........

................ after all, most of us joined in the days before GR carried records, and so had to pay subscriptions to other sites. We also had mostly completed our research by 2007, when the first records began to appear on here ................ or we needed very specialized sites which are not yet available on GR

I was sorry when trouble on the Boards led to some excellent researchers leaving in 2007 ............ and just hope the current on-going squabble and unwarranted accusations do not have a similar effect

GR lost then, and it will lose now. The site just cannot lose members of 8 or more years standing, just because of one person.

Thanks so much everybody. I now know what advise to offer.

Personally I prefer to stay with GR

Not sure who the digs are aimed at again - makes no sense. :-D :-D :-D

Please make sure if you are offering advice 'privately' NanaSue that you also suggest to the recipient that they find out first which site/s best suits their own particular needs. If for example they have Irish ancestors there are many free sites which do not immediately come up on Google and have not been mentioned here, the same goes for local family history sites or 'specific interest sites' ( eg Dockworkers/canalfolk / lightermen etc)

A lot of villages and towns have their own local family history forums.
Aldbourne has one that I belong to.
I am also on several facebook groups fo specific areas such as Wrexham.

Facebook is great, google, Rootschat..there areloads of forums depending on what country you are looking at...I agree with LadyKira a lot of towns and communities have their own societies and family history boards...if you are guiding people somewhere I would only suggest that they have a look for themselves first and see what appeals.

Having read through this thread, why would anyone offer advice when asked for via a PM (Private Message)???

I can undertand on the Find Living Relatives (never even looked there, used once about 1 year ago, got no results so never bothered again!) but on all other boards surely you would answer within the thread so others can see what has been found and not repeat searches.

Am I missing something here! :-S :-S :-S
