RolloTheRed, you are a mind of great information - thanks for that.

I've been to their office in London a couple of times and there are staff from all their geneology companies in designated areas on the same floor. I was slight bemused.

The various sites all have the same internet ip address .... they all refer to the same computer node. There are no GRU servers in other countries.

When you log on using a non uk url the server software is aware of that and can adjust stuff on the site accordingly eg ads.

GRU is not a massive organisation with millions of subscribing members. It is quite a small cog within a small to medium software company in Dundee, Bright Solid. BrightSolid itself is a subsidiary of D C Thompson, publishers of the Beano, People's Friend and other titles, also executioner of the Dandy.

SylviaInCanada - Thks for that.
Proof you learn something every day - currency payments & exchange rates just didn't enter my head

very simply put ....................

On all sites, there are members from all over the world ............... and you get charged by GR in the currency of the country you put as your place of residence.

GR.UK was the first site, then they expanded to set up sites in other countries

BUT the other sites do not carry any different records from the UK one.

If you join GR.nz .... you are more likely to live in NZ, and will be charged in NZ $, unless you show your country of residence to be different.

similarly the other sites.

Like most Canadians, I have a problem in that GR do not allow us to have our "own" currency ................. they assume that we must use US$.

I have to have my country of residence showing as the UK, otherwise I get charged in US $, and the cost of being a member doubles by the time the £ amount has been changed into US $ equivalent, then into the Canadian $ by my credit card company, back in to US$, and then finally in UK £

All because the exchange rates change day by day, even hour by hour!

for most of us .............. those sites are an alternative way to access GR if the UK is acting up.

Thanks everybody for explaining. I'm curious to know why then the seperate sites.

Roy who are you aiming that barbed dig at. It is not like you. Who is claiming superior knowledge certainly not me.

MarieCeleste thanks, my fault missed out a word - original post now edited.
Feel a right plonker - more haste less speed as they say.

I must correct the statement "You have to register on each site seperately" - you don't.

Just go to any of those sites and use your usual log in information. You will then see what records are available on them.

What a strange thread from a member who constantly claims to have superior knowledge about GR etiquette, its T&C's, and how the site works

Just saying

You can sign in to them all you don't have to register again.

The adverts are different.

Some people believe that the other sites are less prone to giving you the error message.

Jonesey thanks for that I was wondering if they have BDM records for their own countries.

Ditto what Jonesey states.

Members sometimes log in via GRNZ or SA if the British site is running slowly. It's exactly the same.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 3 Apr 2013 16:43

All GR sites are in fact the same, no different records are to be found.

I always log on via the South African site (www.genesreunited.co.za) as that does not show the infuriating adverts that the UK site has on its pages.

I have noticed GR have GRAustralia, GRNewZealand & SouthAfrica

Does anybody know what information each site offers.
Do you have to register on each site seperately
Is it any different from what we get in UK

:-D :-D :-D

Sorry missed out a word so edited
