Thankyou for your post Natasha.

I hope it will be enough to stop the unpleasantness caused by the member/s who have not so far understood or accepted GR's stated position on the topic and continually threatened to report any mention of other sites :-)

If members did not WANT to be on this site we wouldn't be here!...many of the long serving members could just go elsewhere but it is the strength of the site that members feel comfortable staying to help others long after they have finished their own research and that new and 'seeking' members know that this site is well worth it ( subscription) for the breadth of experience and helpfulness of the members as well as the trees, records etc.

It's win/win if everyone feels this is an interesting and happy site to stay on :-)

"For example, if you are performing a look up for someone, and the record you have found is available on a family history site other than Genes Reunited, you are fine to reference the site where you found the record. We understand that there are other sites available and that in some instances they will have records that we don’t. We encourage our members to help others and this is one way of doing so."

- thank you; and this had been accepted by GR in the "WDYTYA Live Requests" board http://www.genesreunited.co.za/boards/board/42

Community Advisor Report 25 Apr 2013 12:37

Hi everyone,

We realise that this is a topic that has been the cause of much discussion on the boards, and I have been asked to clarify our stance on this. Having discussed this with our Product Manager, reviewed the replies from our customer support team and our T&C’s, I can confirm that we will allow posts containing references to Ancestry and other competitor sites so long as it is not a direct promotion of a special offer or a derogatory comparison.

For example, if you are performing a look up for someone, and the record you have found is available on a family history site other than Genes Reunited, you are fine to reference the site where you found the record. We understand that there are other sites available and that in some instances they will have records that we don’t. We encourage our members to help others and this is one way of doing so.

We will, however, remove references to special offers on other family history websites as technically that is free advertising for competitor brands hosted on our own site.

We will also remove any derogatory comments or comparisons such as ‘The records on Ancestry are far better than the records on Genes Reunited’. We understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however, seen as these are boards hosted and maintained by Genes Reunited, we reserve the right to remove any comments that represent us in a false or negative light.

I find that a little one sided, as I was on Ancestry the other day talking to another member, telling her that GR keep good marridge records & it's membership choice & what you get for what membership you have at what cost, I have told other members on Ancestry the same thing, never have I been told by Ancestry not to talk of other family history sites or it's competitors.

So are you telling me not to talk about GR on other sites too then? :-0

I only ask as you have to be fair if you want the members to promote GR on other sites then you should allow them to promote sites they are members of on here. After all you only have to go on google enter in Genealogy & you get all the different sites come up any way so you are not stoping anybody from finding anybody so it all seems pointless. Much easyer to allow it & show good will.

More posts referencing ancestry seem to have been RR'd today ....................

as RR was told specifically by GR ..............

IT IS QUITE OK TO MENTION THE NAMES OF OTHER SITES WHEN REFERENCING THEM

THE ONLY THING THAT IS NOT ALLOWED IS COMPARING GR UNFAVOURABLY WITH THOSE SITES.

WOULD WHOEVER IS DOING THIS RR'ing' PLEASE STOP

I gather a poster was asked earlier today to remove their thread because the "ancestry" was mentioned :-(

very unfortunate ................ especially if it was a newbie who was asked to remove the post.
