If the C&P is copied and pasted from one thread/post on to another thread/post then it is NOT a third party posting because the content is already available to all on a public forum

The only time C&P is a in breach (as in a third party post) is when it is a C&P from content only available to two people

example, If i send a PM to some one that info is only available to the person who sent it and the person who received it, (TWO people) it comes under "third party" when the receiver makes it available to others a ( third party )

So are we in trouble if we copy & paste a message received from the GR Team ?

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 10 Jul 2013 11:39

GlitterBaby, The team have removed messages from them that have then been posted on the boards in the past so i would say Yes that does breach T&C

Thanks Roy.

I will have to think twice about that in future.

"The guidelines for message board use also says "Please do not post anything might appear intimidating to other Members." - surely this covers such posts."

If a C&P of what a member has said/posted "might appear intimidating to other Members" on the boards comes under the above guidelines then surely the original post also breaches the T&C's because it also "might appear intimidating to other Members"

Roy

Edit; it's copying and pasting what has already been said, NOT an interpretation or out of context post but a copy of the actual text

GR's is antequated compared to other SMF forums which all have a quote option. To quote another post can often be useful so that there is no misunderstanding to whom the reply is directed especially if answering a direct question.

So I for one would be happy if GR introduced the quote function.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jul 2013 22:24

I would also be very happy if GR introduced a quote function .......................

until then, I will continue to c&p where necessary .........

.... for example, when I am commenting on something that was said several posts before

or when the poster is known to delete or edit posts, without informing others that this has happened.

I c&p under the latter condition because removing a post just makes everyone else look stupid, and I prefer not to look stupid. ;-)

TootyFruity, Sylvia, I would also approve the addition of a quote option on the boards,

It may be a good idea for it to be added as a suggestion on the appropriate board where I would add my support

If we are to stop being able to quote and C&P (at the behest of some members)
then we are likely to find threads littered with:

Re: X's post of date/time, line 3,4 & 8 ...........

This will make threads unreadable.

Think that GR are going to have to reconsider their position of not having staff on duty at weekends.

If only the Abuse Team was manned that would be a step in the right direction to get problems with posts sent for review dealt with more quicker.

Also that they have the authority to replace posts if they are not considered against the T & C's and to dish out warnings or bans if necessary.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 15 Jul 2013 12:22

Confused

My post that was sent for review last night has been reinstated but nothing received from GR about it. I wanted to know the reason given for its review.

Community Manager is noticeable by her absence from the boards for over a week.

Obviously the Team have lost sight of what makes this site work - its members.

Hi everyone,
I just want to clarify about coping and pasting. It is absolutely fine to copy something you see on another thread. We realise that this could be useful information to another member. However, we don't think it is appropriate to copy and paste the contents of private messages.

Natasha, Thanks for clarifying the use of Copy and Paste,

Can i take it from your reply that my post above 10 Jul 2013 11:29 Was a correct analysis of when C&P is OK and when it breaches GR's T&C's/ Board Guidelines

Roy

CupCakes Report 15 Jul 2013 13:11

Hi Natasha,

Your comment is noted. If the C & P was just to be for general informative nobody would object.

What is of concern is the spiteful - aggressive - point scoring - intimidating kind of post with intention to bully or cause upset that is the concern.

Surely these kind of posts breaches GR's T&C's/ Board Guidelines

Personally I just can't be bothered saving my posts with the intention to C & P later. I'm a free spirit, not one to clutter my brain with rubbish. But some of the nasty posts of recent have been quite alarming.

Copy and paste is just that, in this case it is quoting the very words posted by the author, If the author is not comfortable with having their own words posted back to them as a quote, Then the author should not post the words in the first place.
