Tips: Starting Family Conversations

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Genes Advisor Report 17 Apr 2013 15:12

As family researchers, we all have a few difficult conversations to have with family members – whether about complicated topics like adoption or divorce, or just asking aging family for information without being insensitive.

In this season of new beginnings, do you have any tips on starting those conversations? Is there something you’re wondering about how best to bring up? Have you started a difficult conversation that went especially well – or badly? How do you balance your research and curiosity with not causing distress?

I've nudged up both Jonesey's tip thread on approaching the family AND the one by KenSE which gives urls to ALL of Jonesey's tips threads.

Hi all,
Yes we have read Jonesey’s tips which we agree are a fantastic resource, we stickied them on the Genealogy Chat board because we thought they were so useful.
The idea behind this thread was to start a new discussion as we are sure many more of you have invaluable tips to offer. We are certainly not trying to put together a definitive genealogy guide on the community boards! We just wondered if any of you had new experiences to share, or if anyone’s run up against this recently.

I will one day have to have a difficult conversation.

I have found census info and baptisms and electoral roll info indicating that a grandson of my direct ancestor was living with his daughter as his wife while his real wife was still alive and living around the corner.

There will probably come a time when a descendant of this relationship starts there family tree and contacts me.

I am dreading that conversation.
