Yes. My husband has used one at the local library for transcribing parish registers.
Also we have used them for reading old newspapers in a library and parish registers in records offices.

Not used one for about two years before the library had a refit.

I still have mine. One very old one, a more recent one and a portable one.
I can't bring myself to get rid of them.....all these I's ;-)....I was a transcriber for years but now that most records are found on the Internet there doesn't seem much use for a fiche reader these days.

I remember being engrossed for hours reading about other people's lives. The shine wore off when so much became readily available on the Internet. I must have spent a small fortune on researching not only my own family but anyone who was interested :-D
Alas I feel it is time to hang up my fiche and let someone else get the enjoyment from the material accrued over the years.

I still have mine Susanwiv,a Bell &Howell.cost £25 some 20 years ago.!

its good to see all the little dittos and rude remarks the vicar did against entires.

I'm always amazed at the quality of handwriting some had,,,,,,,got stacks of fiche including IGI.

Lol Kay....I always said it was best to read the parish registers rather than a clipped transcribed one. They sure didn't hold back with what they thought in those days. I also think there is much more information on the fiche especially if it is a true copy. it could sometimes be the deciding factor between parents, siblings, children etc.
