I still can't find anything but this will be useful.

Jan, I have a strong lancashire accent and I'd love to have a more neutral accent. I guess a slight accent is the best.

Very few people actually think they have a dialect, because everyone around them is talking the same way.

I didn't think I had a Lancashire accent and dialect ............. until I went to university, and then emigrated.


Now, I still don't think I have an accent, until I hear my recorded voice. THEN I can tell I still have a Lancashire accent

and I have to be careful that I don't suddenly use Lancashire dialect words!

I don't think most Canadians have an accent or dialect .................... particularly those in the province where I live.

Yet others think Canadians do have a distinct accent



I think mgnv was posting somewhat tongue in cheek re the problem of people from different areas of the UK understanding each other.

I know, as I said, that I didn't think I had an accent or dialect ................. but I certainly knew that people from the town 10 miles away had an accent and dialect!

Yes Mary Holt is the mother of Joseph Pink and wife of George Pink. I think she later married John Dunn and has a son John.

I have looked to see if John Holt and Elizabeth had any more children but I can't find any.

is the Mary Holt you want checking the wife of George Pink and the mother of Joseph Pink, abraham's grandson in 1861

do you have any children of Thomas & Margeret Holt or Margaret's maiden name. the birth place in 1861 certainly looks like Inley and in 1851 Ingley. Living in Oldham and Thomas born Rochdale - Hindley is a fair distance away (not impossible I know)

I would have though even with a Lancs accent the 'd' would have been discernable if the name was 'Hindley' but maybe my Lancs accent is not broad enough!

I have found Mary Holt christened 25/07/1819 liverpool-dad John and mum Elizabeth but there are no other births .

I am trying to find if Mary had any sibblings. Please could someone check this christening to see if her mums name is correct thanks

Thanks yes it may well be Hindley. It looks like the address on this census may be a lodging house due to so many people there.

That's a weird thing to say MGNV! Everyone has a dialect don't they, just means a way of speaking - a definition is:

'A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists: Cockney is a dialect of English.'

Maybe you are using the term differently??

I read Thos's pob as Small Bridge Lancs. Margt's as Inley, Lancs, Abraham the Herbalist as Hasle Grove, Cheshire (presumably Hazel Grove near Stockport) and Eliz's pob is blank.

Having spent some time in the Bird ith Hand, I can say no one in Hindley had a dialect - they all claimed to talk ordinary - it seems they thought I had a dalect, though - quite untrue - I just talked ordinary cockney like almost everyone else I knew.

Think it is probably Hindley - dialect up there is strong so comes out sounding like Inley
