Hello Sally, it's a very very common occurrence for first names to be transposed - it happens all the time. Don't be too quick to dismiss a record because the names are the other way around.

On the 1891 census the father George was born Derbyshire and worked on the railways, the mother Elizabeth was born Ardley. On the 1901 census, where her names are the other way round, the father George was born Derbyshire and worked on the railways, her mother is Elizabeth born Ardleigh.

It definitely IS the same family, and it IS her and that IS her marriage!

As at the 1911 census, Elizabeth had given birth to 11 children and 2 had died leaving 9 alive. 8 of those children are accounted for on the 1911 census - the other one not there is Emily Beatrice (Beatrice Emily) who was by that time married.

Sally

If you have sight problems then you are doing very well with your research and using this site.

You just have to ignore me at times as I sometimes feel I am wasting my time asking questions and not getting any answer.

Good luck,

Maureen

You must never discount either a transposition of names or a slightly different name

I spent years looking for a birth for my g/g/gaunt Ellen - she was Ellen on all census returns and even on her marriage she is shown as Ellen. It only when I finally decided to order the only possible birth certificate for the right area/age etc. that I finally found out she was in fact named Eleanor. Even on her death certificate she was shown as Ellen.

And I have more than one instance of a child being named ie Mary Jane and then shown as Jane Mary for the rest of her life. So commonplace a situation in many families.

Do you have your tree on a programme on your computer such as Family Tree Maker ?

Do you usually put your tree on GR using a GEDCOM?
