Christopher Report 8 May 2013 23:09

Hi, I am completely new to all of this. I have just become interested in my mother's family tree because she died about 2 weeks ago and left some interesting things behind. I am looking for Porters, born probably in Portsmouth (England) or Lambeth (London, England) between about 1900 and 910. Charles, Grace, Fred, "Doffs" (probably Dorothy) and Kathleen.

Hi Christopher

Do you know if they are siblings?

Why Portsmouth or Lambeth?

MarieCeleste Report 8 May 2013 23:36

Hello Christopher, sorry about the loss of your mother - times like this do make you wonder about the family before.

Can you tell us anything about her parents so we can work back?

Or are the Porters not family but related to the interesting things she left?

Christopher

Christopher Report 9 May 2013 08:35

The five Porters I have mentioned are all siblings. I believe that they were probably born in Lambeth or Portsmouth as that's where the family seemd to be living at the time and afterwards. My mother was the daughter of their half brother William Henry Augustus Porter. (great name!)

Too much military detail - if Christopher wants the records I could send them.

When he enlisted he was a clerk and lived 30 Warren Buildings, Brandon Street, Walworth.

His next of kin was his father William Herbert Porter, 38 Cleaver Street, Kennington. This address was the one given to send any pay when he was demobbed 1919.

Re ;The posting (Reggie 9 May 8.38)
The Wm H A Reg. Camberwell was the son of William H (Herbert) Porter and Amy Constance Coombes. They married 1897. Her death is Reg same month as Wm H A was born June 1898.
Wm H. married again in Sept 1900 to a Laura Maud Dance (1901 Census) her death is Reg 1909.(Lambeth) probable more children from that marriage but where are they...cant see a death listed for James (1901 Census)
?? Wm H married again to Mary C Archbold June 1914 (Lambeth) cannot find any children for that marriage.

It looks possible Reggie your Census findings may be correct.

Crossed with you MarieCeleste..confirms parents Wm Herb.and Amy Constance Coombes who died (22yrs.) 1898.

The 1901 marriage to Laura Maud isn't on the parish registers to get her family details - wonder if the children were with her parents?

EDIT: Can't find any baptisms for the children.

ANOTHER EDIT: Can't see any Porter/Archbold (also tried Arch*) births after 1911.
So - are the children referred to in the OP the issue of William Herbert and Laura Maud?
