Yes I right click on download/your saved tree, window comes up with a list of favourite links. On the top drop arrow shows desktop, when I click on the drop arrow I only get search-ms.
On the 2 bottom lines. 1st line helina.(username) and GED file on the second. I did click on the document lick to replace desktop but made no difference when I opened it up, just a empty window from photo gallery.

When you get to Save Target As, you need to specify the location where you want to save it, i.e. My Documents, as suggested. If you then navigate to that location you should find the file with an extension of .ged

Once you have located the file on your PC you need to import it into PAF or whatever tree program you have installed on your PC.

Thought I had done it but no. Right clicked on download as suggested, "choose SAVE TARGET AS" came up clicked saved to document. But when I went to open it nothing as it appeared to be saved on photo gallery with no contenets??

If you follow what it says in the link:
http://tribalpages.com/tribe/forum?f=2&v=1&mid=66874&rid=66874
then when you get to 'Save as' you should get a dropdown menu allowing you to store it where you chose, (preferably in Documents).

You need to know where it is so you can import that file into PAF.

Helina, it looks like you are trying to export directly from TP to PAF. I am sure you have to export from TP using the Backup function which creates a GEDCOM file .

You have to store that on your PC. Then you can import it into PAF.

Examine the result carefully. When you are satisfied that PAF has your tree correctly stored, then use it to export another GEDCOM which you can then import into Genes.

Do also be advised that a GEDCOM only transfers the main data and not any photos or notes.

And it can be a little hit and miss on the data transfer, especially around dates. It seems that it can change some dates around depending on the format you have written them in.

I transferred mine via Gedcom from here to Ancestry and lost a couple of people in the changeover.

It is not a precise tool but does the job.

I am sure someone with more technical understanding can explain the date thing more eloquently than me.

:-D

Sorry as I don't have any experience with TP or PAF I can't advise with any confidence. Hopefully someone will see this and be able to help.

In the meantime try googling things like "tribal pages export paf" and see if that gives you any clues.

Kense, Have tried that with no luck.

Reggie has made a good point. I would recommend that you get a family tree program for your PC and maintain that as your master tree (backing it up regularly). Then you can generate a GEDCOM to upload to Genes at any time.

...............and hope that the function is working properly on GR.

Kense

Kense Report 10 May 2013 15:15

The only way, apart from manual input, is to create a GEDCOM file and then use the Import GEDCOM function on Genes Reunited.

That will overwrite your existing Genes tree.

I have not used Tribal Pages but I see on one forum that it is not obvious how to create a GEDCOM so read this first:

Although I have a small trees on Genes, my main tree is on Tribalpages. I would like to transfer my tree from TP to genes but how to go about it.

I have over 8000 people on the tree and do not want to lose any information.

Which is the best way to go about it?
