from Brigid's sleuthing today
further proof that Leizer mendel Fellman from russia in 1891 is lazarus thru the 1890's manchester +Samuel L.Fellman in 1901 Birkenhead + in NY
School records ; 26th nov1891 ;Mary,Betsy + Sarah of 101 new bury road are admitted to Manchester jews school born Russia father's name Lazarus

in1898 Golda fellman b1893of 7 new bury road is admitted father's name Samuel
I think she is Gertrude on 1901 census
there is also Rebecca fellman b1891 who could be our khaya/tilly/matilda (but father/guardian's name is illegible .

On 9th jan 1900 Birkenhead Matilda Fellman Dob of 36 Price St is admitted to
St John Church of England school her parent is given as George (tho her 30 year old brother would be taken as being her father .

NEED to find the original Fellman family we researched in 1901 . Price street
I believe Samuel Fellman is actually leizer- Mendel Fellman with his 2nd wife Sheina
I know census has him as aged 46 and ours should be aged 50 but several of the children's names + ages correspond
what does anyone else think ?

Mera b1880 could have become May
Bassa b1882 Bessie

Sora b1885 Sarah
David b1886 kept his name aged 14 on census
Taube died in manchester at the end of 1891
Khaya b1891 became Tilly aged 10
Gertrude was born in 1893 in lancs followed by Esther in 1897
Elder sister Rebecca married in Prestwich in 1897 then the rest of the Fellman family including my great grandfather George jacob moved to Birkenhead where he met my great-grandmother Charlotte Roberts who could well have been a draper's assistant in his father's shop .

VI ; Leibe Yankel Fellman b1824 ( says aged 47 on 1871 enlistment register for Jakobpils district

Nathan Fellman ( b1868 jacobstadt d Prestwich aged 58 1916)
may have been eldest son of Lazarus + Edith
I have to look for (From jewishgen data ) descendants of ;
full siblings :
Mera b 1880, Bassa. b1882 sora ( Shora ) b1885
David b 1886 m Khaya Kortin in 1911 and they had Jacob David Fellman in Riga in 1912

Lazurus's 2nd wife Sheina had Taube Fellman b1880 and khaya b 1891 in jacobstadt
Are these male or female names ?

brigid Report 15 Oct 2014 14:32

I've found translation of the birth of Shora Fellman 1885 jakobstadt father leizer-mendel Fellman and mother Gessa-Eida
and i saw the translation for Mottels death age 2 in 1884
but I can't then open pages for other years
There is probably a quicker way than looking for Mendel Fellman refs 1 by 1 on a search engine

from Rootschat member ;
I would agree entirely with you, that the 40-year-old Mendel Fellman lodging with George was his father.
the records on Jewishgen and the fabulous transcriptions by Christine Usdin?
suggest that his Yiddish name was Leizer-Mendel son of Leib, but he was known as Mendel (the Yiddish form of Menachem). He and his father were recorded in the 1871 enlistment register for Jakobstadt; his father being Leib Yankel Fellman (i.e. Leib son of Yankel), b. c1824. Yankel is the Yiddish form of Jacob (Ya'acov ).

Leib the Yiddish word for lion. It was the Yiddish 'nickname' given to boys/men who had the Hebrew name Yehuda. This practice is based in the biblical Jacob likening his son Yehuda to a young lion. Many Jewish records would report the double name Yehuda-Leib.

Christine Usdin's transcriptions include the birth registrations of nine of Leizer-Mendel's children between 1879 and 1891 (including two with his second wife, Sheina) and the deaths of two of his children.

I would speculate that the Yiddish name of your George was Gershon-Yankel.

Ruchel + children were going to Omaha in Nebraska to be with husband Sucher Fellman

brigid

brigid Report 14 Oct 2014 19:15

Russian Jews could be from Poland or Latvia ....I wont rule Ruchel out yet ..she could have married her Fellman husband + had all 3 children en route to GB They were born after 1901 censuses + left GB before 1911 census. not finding marriage or births here anyway .

jax Report 14 Oct 2014 18:54

I have a subscription to Find my past...only details on the image was to say they were Russian Jews

brigid

brigid Report 14 Oct 2014 18:45

info fron Roots gen is that Ruchel was a married housekeeper ; I'm assuming a woman .
Her nearest relative was jankel Joska in the town of Basyli
I'm just about to google that before calling it a day ?
It seems to be in Poland ..does that rule Ruchel out as a possible sister in law ?

Thanks Jax
Does transcription purchased + image purchased mean that you purchased them ???
or is this copied from something ?

On transport+ migration page there are 2 Fellman's who could have been named after their father/grandfather Lazurus/Leizer-Mendel Fellman

I don't have credits to look but 1 is 18yr old Lazaris Fellman b1887
Travelling on " The Merion" in 1905 from liverpool to Philedelphia
edit# same boat has other children zachemil aged 11 , Sore B Fellman aged 16 and jacobina aged 11 .(were they without their parents ??)

the other ( more likely candidate due to age + glasgow connection )
is Leiser aged 2 b1908 left Glasgow in 1910 on "The Columbia" from Glasgow to New York
Same boat has Moishe aged 4 +Sheike age1
with Ruchel aged 25 b1885 ....would that be a version of Rachel, or a man's name ?? wonder where other parent was

brigid

brigid Report 14 Oct 2014 11:33

Someone on Rootsgen suggested 2 possible Fellman's connected to manchester

Rachel Fellman death in Prestwich aged 27 in 1900 as another possible sister for George Jacob
I'm not finding her

Nathan Fellman aged 58 in 1916 he would not be a sibling + no way of knowing if he's an uncle or cousin without more details .

There are a load of threads which could well be placed on different boards. this has been here almost 18 months not worth worrying about now. It is the same people that look at all the boards....maybe not always General Chat, Quizzes or Hobbies though

Looking carefully at George Jacob's hospital admissions. He is down as 2nd of 12,2 of whom are dead . the squiggle is a 2 not a 3 which does imply that the 3rd Latvian death Gesa-Eida is his mother aged 38 not a sister aged 14 .

ps shouldn't this thread be in Find Ancestors ?

I believe the Mendel fellman in 1891 census was erroneously listed as female + was in fact George Jacob's father; On the latvian Fellman childrens death records father's name is Leizer-Mendel Fellman, son of Leib 1880, mendel-leizer feldman1884 and leizer mendal felman in 1888 . Probably angliscised to lazurus later ...I wonder if louis could be an alternative spelling ?
