Thanks, everyone for your comments.

Glad helpful for you, MBSG. :-)

Astra - that sounds good. I might well try putting my favourite sites on my desktop as shortcuts (already have my favourite programs on there) but can't get my computer to open links in new tabs - it always opens them in a separate window - which is why I use the rh mouse button to 'open in new tab'. In my Internet Options it says 'open links from other programs in a new tab in current window' but it never does ha ha.

You can set your computer to open each program or link in a new tab. Go to Control Panel and then Internet options select tabs and check the appropriate boxes.
I have all of my programmes and sites as shortcuts on my desktop and each one will open as a new tab rather than a new window and I can (and do) have multiple tabs open at the same time and just flick from one to the other.

Thank you for that as I'm one of the people who hadn't got round to using them!

Thanks, IGP. Good that you have added the Firefox version. S.

Good reminder. Tabs have been around a while now but some people haven't yet got round to using them.

I use Firefox, rather than IE, and it will also open a link in a new tab with just a single action, by clicking the centre button or the scroll wheel on your mouse.

than opening up a new window. (Internet Explorer)

I always used to struggle with new windows opening up when I clicked on links. Nowadays when I click on a link I click on it with the right-hand mouse button. What happens then is that the new item opens up in a new tab at the top of my screen, not a new window that shows in the bottom bar.

So at the moment at top of the screen I have five tabs: my Yahoo email, my GR Home Page, my GR Family Tree, the tab for New Post (this one) and GR Genealogy Chat.

At the bottom of the screen I have just got three items: Freecell Game, New Post (all the other tabs can be accessed by clicking on that but only the current tab shows here) and My Documents.

I did find some old threads on here that were similar but not exactly the same, but include them here for interest. One of them tells you how to save things to your Favourites so you can have lots open at once:
