I'm in desperate need of advice if anyone can help I'd be very grateful......
I'm trying to research my aunts family but am struggling as have limited information and my aunt is very confused now!
Her father William Slater married Eleanor Ethel Young in April 1921, Bow Common, Mile End Old Town. William is my stumbling block as I do not seem to be able to find any records on him, he possibly wasn't born in UK, his father was an Oscar Slater but was Scheffendecker/Scheiffendecker/Scheindegger???? I do not know if he changed his name on coming to UK or prior - came from Germany? I cant find any records for him either.
The marriage cert for William and Eleanor say's that Oscar was a solicitor......
I guess the advice I'm after is How do I find out about name change? Why can I not find any records for Oscar incl. death cert? How do I find out When and if he really did come from Germany?
This side of the family may continue to be a mystery........

This is William and Eleanor's marriage cert. This doesn't help me with finding out whether William was born in the UK or Germany and any info on his father Oscar. Trying to find out if and when they came from Germany. Also don't understand why I don't seem to be able to find an other records for Oscar not even a death record.....I have tried using the Slater surname and also the Scheiffedecker?? surname. :-( :-S

GB posted the information from the marriage certificate so that she and other helpers would have a reference point for William's age ............................

this saved time in her having to ask you and then wait for your reply.

It is something that all the helpers do regularly ................ post the information that you know, but that we do not.

We have to get our head(s) around the family that you "know" so well.



Now we can proceed from there, and see what we might be able to find for a William Slater born ca 1894


always remembering that he might be Wilhelm, with any one of those surnames that you suggest.

always remember that people with Germanic names anglicised their names just before or just after the start of WW1 ..........

........... there was so much anti-German feeling at that time that it really was self-preservation.

Unfortunately, there is no need to go through any formal declarations to change your name, and it seems that most people do not use those legal channels, so there may be little evidence to find.

from the 1891 Census, it looks as if Oscar / Uskar and Minna / Miniie Schieffendesker / Schieffenderker moved to England between Constanze / Constance's birth in 1889 and Richard's birth in March 1891


............. the 1891 Census was taken on the night of 5 April 1891, and ti says on there that Richard was 1 month old.

It would seem that the name change to Slater came between the 1891 Census, and about 1897
