It is not GR's fault because Jax says it happens pasting into Facebook. If it is anyone's fault it is Internet Explorer because it doesn't happen with Firefox.

jax Report 30 May 2013 16:19

Its not GR because it will not C&P on facebook either

I downloaded Chrome but have no idea what to do with it so have given up

I sent ancestry an email because I could not find 5 family marriages on ancestry but they are on freebmd and FMP/GR...one is my parents marriage

Now someone else says they can see them all but she is not in the UK....so whats going on??

Am now going out to do some gardening as I don't want to miss this sunshine although the wind is a bit high.

Well now I have been on the phone to A,y and had a long conversation with a lovely Irish bloke who tells me it is nothing to do with A,y and must be GR.

Firstly Notepad is a simple text editor, Wordpad is slightly more sophisticated as it also handles rich text format.

I have been trying Wordpad copying data from an A'y census page.

If you paste that directly (Ctrl-V) it comes out spaced out.

If you use right click and paste special and select rtf the result is either a block of compressed text or tabulated data, depending on how much of the census page you selected. You want the tabulated format which means going back and selecting more of the census data.

If you then select that table in wordpad and paste it into the GR message box it should paste in the normal format.

Sticky notes are on Windows 7.

Sorry I'd forgotten you'd tried WordPad.

Sticky notes depend on your operating system. They are in the program's, just search sticky note. If your computer doesn't have them, use wordpad which is available on all operating systems, sometimes called note pad and is found in your program's under accessories.

Just copied some census information into a private message and I didn't have a problem.

Though the A site was a bit slow.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 28 May 2013 11:53

Marie I have tried it on wordpad and then on here and it comes out the same.

GenealogyResearchAssistance

GenealogyResearchAssistance Report 21 May 2013 22:19

you could paste It into a sticky note and then copy it and post on here.

Mel, once you've put it on wordpad have you then tried copying and pasting from wordpad to here? I know it's a faff but might just work.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 May 2013 22:06

I have even tried putting it on Wordpad but it comes out with all boxes round it.

jax Report 21 May 2013 22:00

The compatibility view icon is only available for websites that do not work properly with IE. Someone at Ancestry or Microsoft must have decided that the Ancestry Home, Family Tree and Search sites are fully compatible with IE therefore the Compatibility view is unnecessary.

The problem is that the copy function copies table control characters that the GR messaging replaces with new lines. If you paste the information into a word document it will be neatly tabulated and likewise a modern mail program should cope with the layout.

Last time this happened it was corrected in a few days presumably by Ancestry/MS.

It might be possible for GR to update their message board software to cope, and it would make all pasting neater but I don't see them giving much priority to that..

Andrew thats what I wondered at first. My oh put Mozilla Firefox on for me and it was ok for a while but just this weekend it won't work now.

As someone said, when it first happened to me I had no torn page at the top. Now I still have no page just an arrow in a sort of circle to refresh with when on Ancestry.

Andrew Report 21 May 2013 20:39

Trouble seems to be with the new home page

http://home.ancestry.co.uk/

Its that word home...

If you click the 'Get help' you still get the old format

http://ancestryuk.custhelp.com/app/home

and that has the torn piece of paper and does work when c&p.

Of course it could be a wheeze by ancestry to stop people c&p, and doing so many lookups for non members....... :-S

Sylvia, I think it's an Ancestry problem - they appear to have disabled the compatibility icon which people using IE used to be able to click on so that info was compatible across various sites.

Thanks, Ken

so does that mean it is an IE problem or a GR problem?
