Just wondering if someone knows what the difference is between posting up to date birth/ marriage details of people on Living Relatives board and doing the same on Find Ancestors... where it seems to be instantly reported and removed for reasons of breaking privacy boundaries.

Are both boards not openly public ?

Its probably how the posts are worded

'My dad born 23 Dec 1964' is not acceptable, but 'my dad born Dec 1964' is.

'Your (Dad) m (Step Mum) 1999 Dunsearching Jan-Mar vol 17a pg1234' isn't but posting 'PMing possible remarriage in 1999' is.

If some one has been adopted ie name of brother b 23 Dec 1964 is OK because his name would be changed by now.

I think it also depends who is trawling the boards at the time looking for something that maybe against the T&C's

It all strikes me as rather odd as ALL OUR birth, marriage & later death records are online for all to see.

Someone on FB on either GR, Ancestry or FMP was complaining that their records were available for all to see and wanted them removed!

Not too sure how the government would go about that one

She was'nt from England but married here and child/children born here and wanted those records removed :-D

I wonder whether the people in the public domain mind their birth dates being accessable?

I just looked up an old school friend who played football for Arsenal at one time...I would'nt class him as famous, but his date of birth is found on wikipedia

There are no Privacy Laws as such in this country.

There are Data Protection Laws which relate to the 'Fair Use' of personal data, and whilst this goes some way to affording privacy over the processing of personal data it does not prevent it from appearing in the public domain.

Sites such as GR may put rules in their usage guidelines and terms and conditions in an attempt to strike a sensible balance over what their members post in terms of personal information, but even this can be open to interpretation when it comes to the detail.

I've never been sure exactly how the Data Protection works on The National Probate Calendar which publishing amounts of money left by people up to 1966.

As far as the Data Protection Act relates to the Probate Calender, that information is in the public domain. There are ledgers in the Central Probate Registry to about 1990 which can be accessed in person. 1966 is nearly 50 years ago, with many of the named people now deceased themselves.

At some point after 1966, the names of the Executors/Administrators were removed from the Calender. Yes, you can purchase a copy of the Probate/Will/Letters of Administration but the details are hidden from casual view.

The probate calendar does not always list the "total" amount of money left by people,

I have a National Probate Calendar record for one of mine that stated the amount as £236 1s 2d in 1952,

Then when I received the actual will the money actualy left was £5643 12s 3d
