You no longer seem to give the very useful information of mother's maiden name, even though there is a line free for such.

The system seems to exclude as much as it gives in the new format.

System designers should be aware that constantly changing things for change's sake is very off-putting to new members as well as seasoned ones like myself.

I can no longer identify my numerous relatives' offspring, which I was in the process of gathering until this weeks alterations. :-( :-S

Horrace you can put mother's maiden name in the box which says 'optional keyword'

I tried that, and what I got was all those people who had a second 'given' name as per my input family's maiden name...hardly satisfactory...but thanks for your efforts! :-D

Oh dear Horace ! well it did work for me when I tested it out using my own name, but I use Freebmd.org.uk myself as I find it much easier though it doesn't have more recent dates I know.

What if the mothers maiden name is the piece of information you are looking for? :-S

Unless they were born sometime after 1960 use freebmd

I just did a search on my birth > 1912 and my mothers maiden name was displayed ...
Also not sure if you have noticed but after the first search ..." Advance search" is shown under the green search box ... if you click on it ... It permits a "County " box

And as Rose said if you know the maiden name you can add it to "keyword" box or any other word to assist

I have just tried, using my own birth, and 7 options came up, one of which was me.

I then put my mother's maiden name in the keywords box and only one came up (me) but it didn't show the maiden name, just reduced the options.

Useful if you know the maiden name, otherwise no help unless you pay to look at the record.

I got the same as Andysmum .................

got 2 options

put mmn in the keywords box

only my birth came up ................. but it did not show the mmn, just reduced the options.

and of course, this does not work before mid-1911, when the mmn was added to the birth registration


I tried my mother's birth

20 options came up

entered her mmn

No person born with mother's name :-D

entering the county would have reduced the options to 10



Do take note of the fact that many of the individual county bmd sites DO show mother's maiden name before 1911 ....... Lancashire bmd is particularly good at this.

When I tried my mum I got 1233 options but only about 100 had the same first name as her.

Then tried adding mmn and got 3 one was her, another was her sister whose middle name began with an S and an unrelated man with an S as a middle name aswell

Beware there are errors and omissions in FreeBMD even for the years which they claim are complete.This especially applies to marriages.
Ancestry carries better quality images than FreeBMD which can be searched without using the name index.
Most public libraries have free access to Ancestry.

There are also things missing off of Ancestry which can be found on freebmd, FMP and Genes

In my case, I do know the maiden name and married name of my research subjects
and by inputting their married name and date into the birth records I look then for those births in the married name and pick out any with the 'target' maiden name around the subject's marriage date and their location, which usually (or used to, even in GR!) give me their children's names. (I'm talking here about 'children' now long grown to adulthood ,or long gone, not recent births!)
