As Paul is still a novice poster, as are you, click on his name to send a message. He is unlikely to be checking this thread when/if he logs onto the site.

Its always interesting to get other opinions :-)

I came across this thread whilst doing a bit of googling regarding my late uncle, Richard Pyle (1914-c1999).

I discovered a 1936 Southgate South Ward Polling District record, which shows Richard and his wife Elsie (nee Chapman) living at 1 Garfield Road N11. I don't think that Garfield Road exists today but there is a Garfield Childrens Centre in Springfield Road N11, which could have been Garfield Road School previously. Garfield Road might have been re-named as Springfield Road.

Earlier comments on this thread mentions that a family called Chapman lived at 17 Garfield Rd in about 1930. Possibly relatives of Elsie? Does anyone have any further information?

Is this one of the Chapmans?

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
Elizabeth Chapman
Year: 1931
County or Borough: Haringey
Ward or Division/Constituency: Wood Green
Street Address: 17 Garfield Road

The other occupants of #17 are
William Alfred Chapman
Louisa Annie Freshwater
Louis Elizabeth Bunker
Philip Henry & Florence Louisa Hunt.

At one end of the road is School House so probably not the off-licence.
Alfred Harris
Eliza Harris
Alfred Charles Harris
Winifred Emma Harris

The house before School House (or possibly opposite it) -
# 20
Jeremiah Albert & Constance Beatrice Neale
John William & Rose Helen Broome

The lowest numbers
#1
Albert Victor, Florence Annie & Lucy Atkins
William Albert & Elsie Eva Risley

Assuming no 2 is the opposite side of the road to no 1
John Thomas & Hettie Dora Bryan
Ernest & Ada Waddington

No results for 1930

In 1928
No 1
Albert Victor, Florence & Lucy Atkins
Henry & Lilian May Boult

No 2
Thomas John & Hettie Dora Bryan

No 17
William Alfred & Elizabeth Chapman
George William Mason

No 20
John William & Rose Helen Broom
Sydney Davis

It might be worth asking the local FH centre if they have trade directories which are more likely to state if any property is a shop.

Does anyone know the name of the people who ran the off licence on the corner of Station road and Garfield road in about 1930?
My wife's grandparents lived at 17 Garfield road. Name CHAPMAN
Or the number of the building; I may then be able to get some info from the 1911 census.
