Hmm Astra's marriage is in 1902 but 1911 census says married for 16 years. I am not good at maths but....... needs investigating.

Horrace

Horrace Report 23 Jun 2013 17:07

George Tushingham, the licensee of the New Inn, Newtown, Chester, lost his first wife Mary Richardson in 1888, the year of the birth of their last child together, Mary E. Tushingham.
In the later censuses, one Annie Tushingham is named as his wife, with whom he had their first child together, Beatrice.
The problem is, I can find no record of Annie's marriage to George, even in naming no place of marriage in the GR search facility. Neither can I find Annie's maiden name in any of the birth records of their children, so it is impossible to find her own birth record. This is also intriguing because in the 1901 census she is down as born in Whitchurch, Salop; whereas in the 1911 census, she's down as born in Malpas, Cheshire. I am beginning to doubt whether they were married at all. I know I need to send for the certificates, but the basic facts are not to hand.

My wife's mother was a Tushingham from Chester, George's son's niece.

The only hint of a possible maiden name for Annie has been gleaned by me from a web site: 'The Old Pubs of Chester ' where one Lucy Tushingham posted a note, viz: " I'm looking for information (about) The New Inn, Chester. My great granddad ran the pub, and my Dad was born there. William Probyn Tushingham was his son; he took the name Probyn from his mother Annie"

I have, of course, tried the maiden name Probyn for Annie with no result. I'm beginning to think that George and Annie were 'shacked up' together; it ain't just a modern life-style!

Now, those with brains can have a try, eh? (Ha ha)!
Good luck then.
