I discounted that one becase Mary Richardson was 23 when she married George in 1868 and that Mary was 40 in 1870

I see you are making good headway now so will leave you to it.

????
Mary Richardson was said to be aged 21 when she married George in 1868 and her father was named as John.

I'm wondering about this Mary who has a father John. There is a birth in the Mar Qtr 1849 in the Great Boughton RD 19-46 of a Mary Richardson and death in the same RD 8A 261 in 1869 of a Mary Tushingham aged 19.

I know it makes the marriage age wrong, but that wouldn't be a first!

Great Boughton was an area to the East of but also part of Chester. Christleton and Barrow are within a couple of miles too.

Horrace

Horrace Report 24 Jun 2013 13:13

Hi LadyKira,

I take it you've looked through the last two census years M'Lady!?

The name Annie is down as George's wife in 1901 and 1911. In 1901 she's described as born in Whitchurch, Salop; and in 1911 as born in Malpas, Cheshire.
There is no hint of a Mary, as his wife, after the death of Mary Richardson, his first wife.
I have already identified the death of his first wife, which was in 1888, born 1847.

You might be right in suggesting that his second wife, Annie, born 1866/7, used this name Annie, but really had the first name Mary, which perhaps she wouldn't use because of George's sensitive feelings about the loss of his first love. So I will look again for any marriage of a Mary to a George Tushingham in or around Cheshire or even Shropshire (Salop).

Thanks for your efforts on my behalf.

Best Wishes,

Horrace :-)

I know it's not sorting the wives out but came across this:

Headline: CITY POLICE COURT.
Publication:Cheshire Observer
Publication date:Saturday 27 April 1889

George Tushingham (along with many other alehouse keepers) was granted a licence to sell beer at the forthcoming races.
(Many similar articles over the years)
......................................................................................................................

Headline: THE ELECTION COMMISSIONS.
Publication:Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser
Publication date:Tuesday 26 October 1880

In a long article about MPs "treating" the public in order to gain votes, there was a long list of innkeepers and what had been spent. George Tushingham of the New Inn had given a bill for £5 6s 8d being refreshments to that amount having been given to Conservative voters.

(There's also a mention of a John Tushingham of the Cornwall Arms beerhouse).
.....................................................................................................................

Publication:Cheshire Observer
Publication date:Saturday 20 October 1900

A detailed advert for the New Inn being up for sale by public auction along with the adjoining cottage at 27 Church Street. An extract:

"has been in the occupation of Mr. George Tushingham, an under-tenant of Greenall, Whitley and Co., Ltd., for upwards of 25 years. Particulars with any further information may be obtained on application to the Auctioneers ; or to Messrs. WALKER, SMITH & WAY, Solicitors, all of Chester"

MarieCeleste,

That's an appropriate pseudonym Marie; especially considering that in this thread we appear to be 'all at sea, lost, adrift, sans anchor' ! And Annie (whoever she turns out to be!) is the ghost in the machine!!

Ha ha! I like a sense of humour brought into our serious deliberations!

To hell with sorting out the elusive wives of publicans! (especially in our family)
My Mother-in-Law was one of this family: Fridiswid Mary Tushingham, born 1908 in Chester

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Jun 2013 15:35

Sorry Horrace, I should have stated I was going to add some further items. They're all from the British Newspaper Archives.

I've also searched for Marys and Annies with the surname Tushingham but nothing coming up.

My boardname isn't altogether a pseudonym it's a variation of my own name but linked to Marie-Celeste de Villentroy. Contrary to popular belief the mysterious ship was the Mary Celeste, not the Marie (I am such a pedant at times).

Horrace Report 24 Jun 2013 15:52

LadyKira,

Thanks for your note of yesterday posted at 18-20.

I had already found the death of Mary Tushingham (nee Richardson) in the records:
Died 1888. Born 1847. Death in Chester. Vol 8A Event quarter 1. Page 293
line No 365.

But I'm afraid I can't agree with your opinion that George married two different Marys, unless his second wife was Mary Annie (whatever maiden name she had!) or Mary Ann, perhaps.

I'll try searching Mary as a possibility though.

Your help is greatly appreciated of course.

Horrace :-)
