My wifes grandfather was a Blacksmith Farrier working at the Midland Railway Goods Depot, Bristol and I cannot find him on any of the staff records, were they self employed and also I cannot find out where he was registered as a Blacksmith/Farrier
Is their any body whose relations who were Blacksmiths working on the railways who can help me. I have been to Kew and looked through the Records for LMS and GWR and there is not any blacksmiths listed

I expect you have come across this before, but I wonder if the gentleman worked for this company?

http://www.farvis.com/2013site/farvis/profile.html

"The Firm became well known for quality steelwork, in particular marine fabrications and structural steelwork for buildings as well as being first class farriers who had the contract to shoe all the GWR heavy horses that pulled the delivery wagons around the streets of Bristol. They also did specialist ornamental iron and brass work for civic buildings in Bristol and many of the fittings used by the Port of Bristol when maintaining the City Docks - probably replacing items made by an earlier generation of the same family !"

I'm not sure how much work the railway companys would have been able to provide for a farrier. Have you tried researching the coal mines that may have been using that goods depot?

Farriers have had to be registered since 1889. The Worshipful Company of Farriers may have details of the person you are looking for, if he was a farrier.
