If you are really interested, there are many books/articles on your subject. As well as wiki, simply google PQ17 and check out some of the results. Including:-

Now there is a medal for the WW2 Artic Convoys seamen, RN and merchant, what was the area that was ships to sail into be classified as being in the artic convoy
