How do discover how someone ended up in care '11?

Hey
The only things I know are true are my dad is Brian, he had a sister called Barbara who died from breast cancer quite young, there are two other sisters but I don't know their names. Dad was born in Ashton under Lyne in 1934 and his parents were Alice Mitchell and Ulric. He talked about his grandfather being from Derbyshire. The names on my tree for his dads bit did come from a lady who was researching her husbands tree who is my cousin, Barbara's son but contact was brief. She did tell me I have 5 half siblings which was quite exciting xx

Also siblings called Roy, Albert and Doreen. Don't see a Barbara.

In that case, and if you have no idea when your grandmother died, I think the only way to get any further with her would be the marriage certificate - we need her age and father's name - and hope she was born before the 1911 census.

However, if that is your tree on ancestry, how sure are you of the parents details? This looks like their marriage:

Marriages Sep 1887 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRIERLEY Sarah Ashton 8d 730
BUTTERWORTH Marshall Smith Ashton 8d 730
COURLAND Alice Ashton 8d 730 <<<
MITCHELL George Harry Ashton 8d 730 <<<

and from Cheshirebmd, Alice's birth:
Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1900
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
MITCHELL Alice Stalybridge Tameside COURLAND STB/10/30

Post up when you get more details from the certs, then maybe we can get further.
Good luck!

Hi Flip,
I know nothing about them at all. I lost contact with my Dad when I was about 18. All I remember is he said his fathers family originated in Derbyshire but I'm not sure how far back the Derbyshire bit comes in. I did come across a cousin on here but she was surprised I even existed and quite worried about the outcome of knowing I did, so I saw her tree long enough to get two names and then it closed.
So I don't know anymore.
I also had a breast cancer scare a while ago and they are testing for the genes but without info they wont go any further... so frustrating!

Well a marriage cert should give her age, and name her father - if she knew him.

Do you remember any other names from your grandmother's past, it sometimes helps, even if just a distant memory, like a brother, sister or parent? Does your parent (not sure whether you are referring to maternal or paternal grandparent) remember any aunts/uncles which could give a lead, or where they were from?

Added: Did Alice die before his re-marriage, or did they divorce?

Hello,
Wow thank you for all the replies,
Alice was my Grandmother, so he married her first and then another lady later. So yes, it is him. I am waiting for his birth certificate to come.
I'm struggling with Alice too, so if I order a marriage cert will that have details to help with her too?
Thank you!
Aly

I think that's Aly's tree Margee, the daughter of Ulric's son.

A tree on Ancestry says that he was the son of John Wyatt and Anne Waite. He married Alice Mitchell and his 2 children had the surname Wyatt,].

Maybe his mum was a single lady and had to work

I would suggest getting his birth cert to se who his mum was and then look for her on the 1911 census

Have you found where all the rest of his family are?

All dead?

Others sibling in care?

Everyone else living happily together and only him in care?

Mother remarried?

Father remarried?

A little background would help to give more realistic options.

Thanks

Hi Aly,
I checked out the 1911 Census and it shows him in the care of the The Moore family.

One reason he could have been in care was that his mother was in Hospital or Prison (remember the suffragette movement was at it's height at this time and many of them got arrested).
His Mother may have died.
Do you know who his Mother was? Where she was in 1911 will be the clue as to why he was in care.

Hope this helps, kIWIBIRD
