Thanks to everyone for your kind reply's,

I have had a look at the links you gave, and the picture of the actual place is great!

I don't have a sub for the newspapers on here, and his name was George Charles Arkell. I found his probate on Ancestry, and that's where it said he died at the colliery, so was just interested to see if i could find out more of what actually happened.
So if anyone could look him up in the newspapers that would be great.
Thanks,
Alison.

If it was a mining accident you may find details on here:

The British Newspaper Archives go up to 1965 (although not every newspaper that was ever published has been scanned).

The collection is available on this site. If your sub doesn't cover that collection then if you want to give us his name we could take a look.

Find out the name of the local paper and contact them.

They may have an archivist who would be willing to help.

I did that when looking for info about a relative who died after an accident in Blackpool

Hi Alison.

I suggest 2 things. Firstly, it might be that a member of staff at the local archives might do this, though it would be pretty time-consuming and if they are willing to do so they might well charge.

I googled 'Northern United Colliery, Cinderford' and found the Forest of Dean Family History site, which has a forum - you could sign up there and see if anybody with a local interest can help you:

A photo is also shown on the same site, which might interest you?

Hello,
I have found a death for a man in 1958 in Gloucester, it says he died at Northern United Colliery, Cinderford.
I was just wondering if this might have been reported in the Newspaper? and how i could find out more.
I don't live in Gloucester, so cant go into the records office there.
Can anyone help?
Alison.
