Search Census / Electoral Roll by Address?

I have a link to:

"Aunt H, Glen Dale, Ridgeway Road, Fishponds, Bristol"

from my father's papers, this was in 1932 ish.

Is there any way for me (or anyone else who's feeling kind ) to look up the address and find out who was living there?

I note GR only has about the last 10 years of Electoral Rolls, where might I be able to find "all" of them?

Pam

Pam Report 16 Jan 2014 10:10

Electoral Registers will probably be held at the main library local to the address.

Thank you Pam, that probably means paper records I suppose?

Have you tried contacting the library that hold the Electoral rolls for that area they may look for you?

Remember that only people eligible to vote will be listed

http://www.bristol.gov.uk/LibraryViewer?XSL=library&LibraryId=1040

this site will give you contact details for the Fishponds Library

They might do a look up for you but may charge.

That's very helpful, thank you, I'll contact them.

It turns out that the local library has copies of the current electoral roll, the earlier ones are in the archives. However I "met" a couple of very helpful people in the library and in the Records Office - no results as yet but hope springs eternal ...

What are you trying to find out/prove?

KeithG

KeithG Report 17 Jan 2014 12:47

Good question Reggie!

I know little about my father, his life, family, etc. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I discovered I once had a half sister!

In his papers I found reference to "Aunt H" and then some time later a "Mrs H Parr" - who may or may not be the same person. In the little I have been able to reconstruct of the family so far, I cannot see a candidate for Aunt H or Mrs H Parr. Logically she has to be one of:

sister of father - but none of them had H as initial
sister of mother - ditto but only for Aunt H
wife of brother of father - open, I haven't researched thoroughly yet
wife of brother of mother - ditto but only for Aunt H
someone unrelated with an "honorary" title of Aunt

So I would like to find first off the full name of "Aunt H". If it's Parr then I'd want to find out where she fits in - if she does. If it's not Parr then I'd like to figure out why she was "Aunt".

Pretty good aim for a long shot

Thanks Thelma, that might just be her, at least the dates are in the right ballpark (my father was born 1895).

Is there any way to see the will?

So I need to search for a marriage Something Parr and Hannah Emma Something

Any other possible lines of investigation?

Hey! Bull's eye! Well that's the initial impression, mustn't go overboard ...

James Parr + Hannah Emma Pearce, Warminster 1902

And I have a James Parr as brother of Thomas William, my father's father. So that ties up. Now to check whether this James Parr is my James Parr! Which I think means I need the certificate.

Thanks Thelma!

Note the sister's name and Wiltshire connection.

Brilliant! Thank you Thelma & Chris

Royal is a regularly appearing name in the family. Looks like a dead end, however, as the son died young. Is that your impression too?

And the father, James, has disappeared?

Yes, TW Parr + Edith Tidy were my grandparents.

Thanks for the Jones find too, that was the mother of my father's first wife.

(you could take a 14 day trial Ancestry (google) think you'd be busy!)

KeithG

KeithG Report 17 Jan 2014 17:21

Thanks again Chris. Does this imply that the wills are available on Ancestry?

They do say you can start on GR but in the end you'll go to Ancestry ...

Looks as if James died young, and before the birth of his son, that must have been tough for Hannah.

But I'm confused. Pig in the Pound is in Romford, James died in Gloucestershire? Hypothesis: James & Hannah lived in Romford but Hannah went back to her parents to have the baby?

Thelma

Thelma Report 17 Jan 2014 19:50

Write down what you have in date order.
JAMES PARR
Warminster district 1902 marriage
Romford 1906 Pig in the Pound
Romford district,early 1907,birth of son
Bitton Gloucestershire 22/7/1907 death

KeithG

KeithG Report 17 Jan 2014 21:28

Yes, you're right, thanks, so dump that hypothesis. So I wonder what took him back to Bristol? And what is the address at which he died?
10, Redfeld Road Oldland Common
His whole family (parents + siblings) seem to be born in Isleham, Cambs
He goes to Bristol for some reason, marries Hannah Pearce, takes her back with him to Essex, then moves "back" to Bristol.
I suppose the only route to knowing more would be the newspapers on the offchance that something was reported?
