Hi My Grandfather Was William Ernest Hughes, I have his Army Records and know that he joined the Army in Liverpool in 1880 and he was just one month of being 19 so I thought his birth certificate would be easy to find nNO SUCH LUCK just had email from National archives they cant find him, has anyone any ideas please. Maybe he wasn't registered? There were no penalties for not doing so before 1874 ish

Wrong couple he was born c1881 on the 1911 census

Thank you everyone for your help he was discharged inMarch 1904 age 41yrs 1 Month, so I think his birth date was correct at February 1863.
On his Army records his next of Kin was origionally as Muale John Terry but this was crossed out and my grandmothers name put in. So first name is very hard to read it could be Nuale Huale or Wuale or something else altogether. I dont know when my grandparents married but my Grandmother was called Mary Agnes Spain and she came from Porthumna in Ireland.
I also discovered by re reading his army records that pre signing on for the Army he served in the 2nd Royal Lancs Militia.
As a family we have always thought that he was born in the Everton area of Liverpool.
