Do you know if the father actually DID pay maintenance? If so you might find something in Magistrate Court Record Books. As long as the case was more than 30 years ago you can see the record books.

It was a different sort of case but my grandfather left my grandmother with 3 children in the 1920's and she took him to court for maintenance. We found the case in the Magistrate Court books at the local archives. It gave details of how much he had to pay each week and also how much court costs he had to pay. Even gave us the name of the policeman who served the court papers on him.

It took quite some time working our way through the records but that was probably because some of the other cases were fascinating and we spent a lot of time reading about them.

It might be worth a try.

so thats another full stop then

dont think i will ever beable to find who i am looking for as i have know info at all

i was hoping that maybe it had to go to court and i might beable to find something out

If the parents were not married then his name would only be on the birth certificate if he agreed to go to the register office with the mother and admitted paternity.

would anyone know weather the fathers name would have to be on a birth certificate if the mother wanted payment in the 1950s
