Is anyone able to point me in the right direction, please?

Would there be records held anywhere relating to this school at the time of the 1891 census?

I think a great aunt of mine was there, but I'm unsure how to verify this.

Many thanks,

Sue

Hello Suzanne.
I would think records would be held for the school. Have you tried putting in your aunts name in the 1891 census to see what comes up. I can have a look for you if you put her details on here. Her name and date of birth, where she was born.

Thank you, Sylvia.

Her name was Elizabeth Mary Ann Berry, b 24/6/1881, Islington.

I have looked for her in the 1891 census, by which time her mother had died, and her father had abandoned her. The only possible record I can find that might be her is in an orphan school in St John's Wood.

I have found the correct records for her for both 1901 and 1911censuses.

The address on this 1891 census is Grove Road, corner of St. Johns Wood Orphan School. There is an Elizabeth Berry aged 10, and above her name is Ann Berry aged 10. I am not sure if they are different girls or it has been transcribed incorrectly. See what you think Suzanne.

Did your Aunt ever marry

Hi Sylvia, yes she did marry but later in life when her man's first wife died.

It is just this orphan school business that I am stuck on, and whilst it doesn't make any difference in the greater scheme of things, it would provide the missing piece of the jigsaw if I was able to prove (or not) that that was where she was in 1891.

She later became a school nurse (1901 census), a superintendent nurse in a workhouse (1911) (a fact she never shared with the family) and later, a hospital matron.

She was a formidable character, and during her lifetime, family members never questioned what she said, believing it all to be true! Alas, not so!

Thanks for your interest,

Sue
