Have received Pm from Jennie.
It seems her husband does not know if he was adopted or not - the suspicion has arisen because of a lack of a birth record, and something he overheard which might or might not apply to him.
I have suggested that he contact the GRO initially, just in case it's a case of simple omission, and then if that fails do as Flip suggests.

You've got a couple of options - as I posted on 11 June you can try to order the bc through GRO. Alternatively he should apply through here (it's free) for his original bc & adoption file if you now feel he may be adopted:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-or-access-to-birth-records

It's a simple process, and no big deal that he will need to see a councillor before the details can be released.

Hi Jennie. Assuming he is adopted (not completely sure from what you say), your husband has a right to see his adoption file. This will give him his birth name.
I suggest he asks social services for advice in the first instance, though it might be worth looking here:
https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register
However, I am a bit confused as to how he knows about his sister if this is the case? And how other people seem to know his birth name, or think they do?
If the name he currently uses is his adopted name, this will not show on the birth indexes, if that is what you mean??

Hi Jan, we only heard a snippet of info at my father in laws funeral a few weeks back so we are unaware of anything, his mother passed 2 years ago so we dont know who else to ask. my husbands name is the one I gave you I have no idea where else to look...is there an adoption information website? as presumably if his name isnt in these records then he would of been registered as someone else?
thanks all for your help
jennie xx

Good to see you back Jenny!
I took the liberty of sharing the info you gave me with the other members here who offered to help. As far as I know nobody has found a thing.
I assume your husband is adopted? May I ask where the name details came from?

That's interesting Jax, not me going mad then!
Obviously Jenny had 2nd thoughts, fair enough.

If someone deletes their account all messages to and from disappear....rather odd :-S

It's not you, I tried earlier and got the same.

I know!! But I can't think of any other explanation.
Can you try a PM too, in case it's just me? Without more info it's not possible to help any further.
Seems a bit strange as she sent the details to me after I offered to look, but nothing since. And my messages to/from her have gone too, though most likely I have deleted them in error I suppose.

Bit drastic Jan! Most people only delete threads, not themselves ;-)

I think Jenny has taken herself off the site?? Have tried PM'ing her again but in name box it says something like 'insert name of contact', and without this a message is impossible.

As you know all his details (as they are at the moment) you could try ordering a bc from the GRO, by not giving GRO index number you can put in his and parents details on the form. I know someone who did this and it came back, but as an extract from the adoption register (you mention adoption in your opening post).

I could take a look, but highly unlikely to find anything if Jan hasn't managed to.

brummiejan Report 9 Jun 2014 17:20

Have had PM from Jennie, and I agree - can't find a sign, having looked at indexes up till 2nd qtr 1972.
The birth she mentions is someone else i think, middle name different.
Does anybody else fancy a go?
Also, have asked Jennie if he has ever actually ever seen a birth cert.
Where did this name come from I wonder?
His sister's birth is recoded.

Remember that one has 6 wks to rego a birth, and the GRO records aren't indexed by quarter of birth, but are indexed by quarter of registration.

This is intriguing isn't it Jennifer!
How would you feel about PM'ing the details to me (or any other member who is equally nosy!) and I'll have a look?
Also, does he have siblings? Might be worth checking their births out too.
