Nun travelling from England to New York in 1890's

zoandzo Report 18 Nov 2014 13:54

My great aunt became a Nun in the 1890's. Born 1871 her birth name was Sarah Ann Kennedy and her Nun's name was Mother Mary Frances. In the 1890's she travelled to New York to work there. I can find Sarah Ann Kennedy names on passenger lists but not Nuns names. Occupation states SPT. Does anyone know which name she would travel under and what SPT means ?

Hi.
I can't help you personally, but folks on here might find it helpful if you say where she was born, and say when you last have her on a census - just puts her in context.
Where did you see 'SPT'?

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 18 Nov 2014 14:18

She would travel under her given name . There are several other females travelling on the same vessel listed as SPT which is under the profession or calling list
It looks from other sailings that it may stand for spinster !

zoandzo Report 18 Nov 2014 15:25

Hi Brummiejan, she was born in India where my g.grandfather was stationed at the time. From 1873 they returned to Manchester, Lancashire. I have the family on 1881 census. She became a Nun there but travelled to NYC. SPT was entered on the passenger list as her occupation.

Shirley, you might be right with spinster. I suppose nuns would travel as such.

Thank you for your advise

Interesting

I cannot find Sarah Ann on the Passenger Lists on ancestry .............................

the Etruria was one of the ships that carried many migrants across the Atlantic from Liverpool to New York.

My great aunt and her brand-new husband sailed on her 2 days after they married, in 1902

try the Ellis Island site, and see if you can work out if that Sarah Ann is yours ................

she might of course have travelled as Sarah A, Sarah, Miss S. A. :-(

Yes patchem - this has been a puzzle for me for a long time. Both families are mine but why two different addresses on the census ? James Kennedy aged 14 is my grandfather but why are the males in the family missing from one of the census ?

patchem

patchem Report 22 Nov 2014 00:26

Sarah said who was actually in the household, whilst William said who was in his complete family?

So were they in the process of moving from Holme Street to Coal Yard Passage?

Are they together in 1891?

zoandzo

zoandzo Report 23 Nov 2014 14:28

Sarah died in 1887 and William died 1892. They remained together until death. Not sure if they were in the process of moving house. Certainly in 1891 the family were living in Copestick St, Manchester.

I am not sure about that passenger list - on the image she is shown as married (dittoed below the woman above) although her age appears in both the married and single columns; also, she appears to be travelling alone (nobody else on the same ticket no.) and I very much doubt if a nun would have travelled on her own.
