I have been looking on my own, and all I have found is an article that he got a ticket for driving his truck without a licence.

Soooo I have decided to ask the nice people on here : soooooooo

I am looking for anything on Stanley Joseph Hartnell’s hauling company. I even have the address from the 1920 Phone book : Hartnell S.J., Haulier, Removal Contr 378 Gloucester rd. Bristol …. 2342

A picture would be nice. March 18, 1880 – Sept. 6, 1940

I can't find anything else ............

so I'll hand it over to the day shift to see if they can find anything.

As an aid to them ................ I think RMS has EVERYTHING on his life up to the 1911 Census.

I just posted the above to give me an idea of where he came from etc etc

Rocky is the info you already have

Western Daily Press dated 12/01/1929

Horfield Resident Tells Sad Story To Bench

For making a false application for the renewal of his road fund licence Stanley Joseph Hartnell of 2 St Leonards Road Horfield was bound over for 12 months.......used the lorry unlicensed .............. Defendant said he had one old lorry not worth £7.00 he was down and out and on the day he used it he had no food in the house. Not getting the dole he had not applied to the Guardians for relief. He used the lorry on the occasion of the purpose of getting something to eat. If anyone would give him a situation of £2.00 he would give them the lorry. At present he had nine count court summons on his hands and was before the Tolzey Court a week ago. He was one of the first Special Constables in Bristol and was still on reserve.

Sylvia - are you accepting that challenge?? :-)

Chris - interesting, but as far as I know not related.

Shirley - that 1939 one must be the right one as he was living at 7a Egerton rd at the time of his death, or at least his wife was. Yes Florence's middle name is Ellen

Tenerife Sun - yes, that is the one

Now you know why the Hartnell family is such a challenge to find. The information keeps changing :-|

I wondered if this was related, or him operating under different initial?:

Good question AustinQ. Maybe Florence took over and started slowly moving the business up the road

Which might explain why the "Son" left and moved in with his sister AH HA! :-0

RockyMountainShy

RockyMountainShy Report 10 Apr 2016 04:06

You know, considering that the building at 378 Gloucester Road was owned by Stanley from 1921 - 1931, I am surprised that he never advertised his business. :-(
