Paula in California

Paula in California Report 18 Jun 2007 19:30

Hi Mike and all the regulars! I have seen this link before but have never posted. I am an ex-pat' of Leicester, Wigston to be precise. I grew up there in the 70's and 80's, then in the early 90's served some drinking time in Crete where I met my American hubby! California is where we live now. I am somewhat of a novice in genealogy as I never get much time to spend researching, I have been a member of GR for a couple of years though. With the introduction out of the way, the names on my family tree in England are Ford, Thorpe, Collins, Timson, Bardell, & Follows. (so far!!!) I hope to add more soon!!! (don't we all?) Paula

Ha, ha Mike!! No link to Ford Motor Company as far as I'm aware of!!! There was a story of one of my Ford ancestors having a bridge in Pompei named after him, but I've yet to find proof of it!!! Actually my Ford search has become very confusing to me as there was no creativity in naming children in those days~ they were all George!!!!! (mental note to self~ No More George's!!!) Are there any online links to street maps back in the early 1900's for Leicester? Paula

Paula in California

Paula in California Report 19 Jun 2007 22:31

Yes, I went to Guthlaxton!! I left there in 1985. Howkins doesn't ring a bell though. What years did he go there? Did you go there too? Did he go to South Wigston, Bushloe or Abington first? Paula

Greeting’s Again. …… Paula You asked the following :~ “Are there any on line links to street maps back in the early 1900's for Leicester?” The one I use is called old-maps It can be a bit difficult to work but it soon becomes easier If you type that into goggle Old maps .......& click on the UK button. Next Window. Click on the link to old- maps Next Window This Is the home page for the site ( You can save a link to it to your favorites ) 1/2 way down click on the green wording “ to start your search “ Next Window Click your mouse on the “ Search Box” ( top left ) Type in the location you require Then click “ GO” Next Window. The results will appear in the Pink Box Click on the scroll bar of this box Choices are displayed in a drop down menu. Click on the one you want States loading……….. Next Window. Will be the image you require Click on the white arrows on the edges of map to navigate left, right, Up,& Down. The scale settings are on your left. It does sound a bit daunting to start with but it gets better each time you use it If you scroll down a bit there usually three maps of different years Just click on the one you want & it will load up. Hi Mike Edwin Phillips, born August 1889 was the son of Abraham and Charlotte (nee Allen). They were in the hosiery trade and were in Tyndale Street in 1901. As far as I am aware he was conscripted after his marriage in 1915, but I can't find his medal card. Bruin Street is/was off Belgrave Road on the left going out of town, before you get to the junction with Loughborough Road. How can someone I knew turn out to be a mystery? Will be interested to hear what you turn up. Cheers Sheila

Father :~ Robert. Mother :~ Eliz. according to my data base:~ Nanne Harrison Married :~ .......DANIEL WINTERTON. St. Michael's Parish Church. Thurmaston. 13th. May 1801. By LICENCE. Back to the drawing board ? If I get time I'll have a look at the Parish Registers for St. Michaels Thurmaston at the Records Office to see what I can find. Mike - thanks so much for looking that up for me. I Feel that baptism would make her a little young to be married in 1801 - lol. But stranger things have happened on my tree - another gt gt g/m was a 13 year old serving wench when she was put in the pudding club by His Lordship! It would be wonderful if you can find the time to have a look at the Records Office for me - this one has puzzled me for 20 years. The family story is that the Harrisons were prosperous farmers and Daniel Winterton married well! (His family were FWK's before this event). Its hard to find the info when you live out in the Aussie bush!

Mike - thank you so much for that - it is marvelous! It at last gives me Nanny's fathers name - William Harrison. And we were right about a simple FWK marrying well- a Grazier! (In Australia that would have made him a member of the aristocracy! - lol)
