I would suggest that once you find your local LDS centre pay them a visit when they are open. Even if facilities are overbooked you can then at least see what they have on file. Maybe even chat to a couple of people using the facilities when they take a break.

As we all know, we Family Historians will talk for hours to anyone who will listen and love to pass on our experiences.

You could also do yourself a favour and join your Local Family History society, even if you and your family are not from the area originally, they will have people with years of experience to help.

I live in Sth London but a large part of my family came from Bristol. So I joined the Bath & Avon FHS, kept my membership up for a few years and posted some queries in the magazine, it was a godsend.

If considering joining your local group do yourself a couple of favours
1: Visit their website
2: Go to one meeting
Some local FHS' are excellent and others less so, a lot depends on the amount of members as it is all voluntary and so obviously less members can often mean a harder time with facilities etc.

All you can do is try out these options and decide for yourself which suits your purpose.

As you live in London you might be better served in visiting the main LDS site at Regents Park. Any excuse for a day out. :-D

I go to a LDS centre in Bristol. I am researching my Polish family and by chance, there is a film of BMDs of the place where my Grandfather was born.
You can order a film online £7.50 for 90 days loan and it is renewable. You may have a wait, as I did, for about six weeks for the film to be sent from Salt Lake City.

They are lovely people at this centre, always very helpful and interested in what you are doing. Sadly they are not open that often now, only two days a week and staffed by volunteers.

The flagship centre in Exhibition Road, Hyde Park is closed for a refit and I understand the facilities are temporarily relocated to the National Archives at Kew.

Apart from having a copy of pretty much all of their UK film and fiche collection, there is free access to Ancestry, FMP, The Genealogist and the National Archives site (and others) at Hyde Park.

My local centre in Hull has free access to Ancestry. No-one has ever tried to convert me and the volunteers have always been very helpful. The centres usually have in stock the filmed registers for the locality but you should always phone to make an appointment and check that what you want is available.
