Help requested to establish Gillespie siblings in

Can anyone please help me esablish if the following Gillespies are connected. I am unable to find any birth registrations (I think between 1801 - 1810), which would, of course, identify their parents. Family Search has turned up 4 marriages in the same area (Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright) only a few years apart - this is why I have a suspicion that they may be siblings:- James Gillespie to Mary Fergusson - 16.06.1829 John Gillespie to Susan Maxwell - 31.08.1830 Thomas Gillespie to Henrietta Cannon - 1827 Mary Gillespie to James Cannon - 26.08.1833 Any help would be very appreciated. Haven't found any of the siblings yet but have found some of their children. Do you have any? don't want to duplicate what you already have. Pam

This could be James's family in 1841 - the Isabella is the right age for one of the children I have found and Sarah could be Mary's sister?: Sarah Forgerson abt 1818 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872 View Record Alexander Gillespie abt 1840 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872 View Record Isabella Gillespie abt 1834 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872 View Record James Gillespie abt 1806 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872 View Record Jannet Gillespie abt 1832 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872 View Record Jean Gillespie abt 1837 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872 View Record Mary Gillespie abt 1816 Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbrightshire 872

I've found the marriage certificate for James and Mary, but his parents are marked with a dash and his death cert. doesn't give any info. on his parents either. It is actual fact James' parents I am looking for, therefore, by trying to trace his siblings that might give me a thread to find his parents. I also have the census for 1841 with Alexander and his sisters, but that is about all. I will try to find the death certficates for the other Gillespies mentioned - see that helps any! Elaine

Hi Elaine In the BVRI there are 6 baptisms for children of James Gillespie and Mary. 5 baptisms for children of Thomas and Henrietta and 4 for children of James Cannon and Mary. Some of these are also on the IGI From the 1851 census John Gillespie who married Susanna Maxwell was born c1761 Irongray.(2 Maxwell sister-in-laws in the household). James born c1801 at Dalry and Thomas born c1799 at Dalry. Unfortunately Mary Cannon died between 1841(birth county Kirkcudbrightshire) and 1851. John G could be their father. Hope this helps Maureen

Potty, Gillian and Maureen Thanks for all your help - I am very grateful. This is my James Gillespie with his family in 1841, but I will have to check out Thomas further. Thanks for the tip Gillian - I will have to check the other Gillespie death certificates - hopefully they will give some more information about their parents - hopefully the same names. Maureen - According to James' headstone he was born at Dalry (1801 -1805). You had a very good theory that John Gillespie born c1761 could be their father, but the problem is that none of their children or descendants were named 'Susanna'. The same christian names normally follow through from generation to generation - don't they!? If you can contribute some other theories, please feel free - sometimes one person can't see the forrest for the trees! Elaine

Elaine - Have you given any thought to the fact that John Gillespie who died in 1852 may well have married twice. Firstly to Isabella HAIR resulting in births which included those of Thomas in 1797 and James in 1805. After the demise of Isabella he marries Susanna MAXWELL.
