Thanks to OC, have got my tree online now, and its a fantastic site. Gives birthday reminders, a guestbook, and shows number of visitors to site. I love the relationship tool, where you tap in your own name (for example) and that of an ancestor, and site tells you what relationship you are to them. Im a complete technophobe, but this is easy!

Thrilled that you like it - makes, erm, other sites trees look amateurish, doesn't it? And it is so easy - I am a complete computer idiot and even I managed it without any trouble. Don't forget to 'tick the box' if you want to have a name matching facility on the site - I have had four excellent contacts already, in the few weeks I have had my tree on there. Curiously, two of them are GR members, and we have never had a Hot Match between us on this site! OC

I am considering using Tribal Pages. I had a look at their site and could not find an answer to a question. On GR, when I want to update my tree, I simply re-import my GEDCOM from my home computer. I could not see if this could be done on Tribal Pages. I am expecting to add a lot of info to my tree soon and would not want to have to enter the new info in two places. Debbie

I too am thrilled with Tribal Pages, it is such a good site, however as OC has pointed out the tick box, I just checked and couldnt find it. Where should I be looking please?

An Olde Crone Report 5 Nov 2006 13:09

Lynda There isnt actually a Tick box, sorry, but on your Home Page, there is a question which says something like, do you want your names published on this site? Sorry - I will go and check now, instead of just waffling! Also - if you have the free option on TP, you cannot import and export a GEDCOM - I am just about to upgrade to a paid account in order to do this. Back in a minute. OC

Yes - go to your Edit setting, scroll down the page which appears, go to Website settings, then go to Directory Listing. You have the option to 'add your names to the Tribal Pages search engine' or to keep your tree absolutely private. There is also a way of getting your names onto Google - I think you have to submit your TP address to Cyndi's List, but I haven't done this yet. OC

Thanks OC and all who have helped with issues in the past :-)

Debbie once you sign up you just import your gedcom under tools. I have been on it for ages. The best there is. Bob

OC, do you know how much it costs to become a full member? And is this the site many GR members seem to be defecting to?

No Karen - it's another one. Don't know anything about Tribal Pages - sorry.

BobClayton

BobClayton Report 5 Nov 2006 13:59

Karen it's about £13. Take my advice and just register for free. Its ok for most people. I upgraded but really shouldn't have. It's easy to do if you need to. Bob

Clive Yes, it is slightly irritating that TP does not have a box for baptism dates, nor for burial dates. However, I put these into the narrative and it works for me. For a FREE tree, I think it is unsurpassed - wonder if ITV would consider buying the site and making it part of this one, instead of tinkering endlessly and ineffectually with the clunky one on here. Hi, I agree Tribal Pages is great and so easy to set up and free too. I have yet not needed to pay anything. I would be interested Old Crone if you find out how to get your names onto Google via Cyndi's List. I have had a look but can't seem to see how you would do this. Thanks

Im only a free member as hubby just been made redundant, but its still let me import my GR tree; it took just 10mins!

BobClayton

BobClayton Report 5 Nov 2006 16:38

Clive TP has more than 80,000,000 names. So don't think it's tiny. Old Crone wash your mouth out, the last thing we want it TP messing up and having to pay for it. Bob :))

The fact that I have my tree on Tribal Pages, as well as on my hard drive, is the reason I rarely comment on the tree on here. If I get a confirmed and verified find, I'll add it to this one, but otherwise I'm not bothered. Tribal Pages, to me, is the best free site there is, and you get a whole web page of your own! What's more, it looks good! OC, as Robert said, wash your mouth out with soap, we don't need ITV buying TP, then ruining it like they have with this one. lol

Hi Have just been looking at the site and registered for free- all looks great. Can I upload my tree straight from GR or do I have to have it all saved on a programme on my computer? If i can do it straight from one to the other, how do I do it? Cheers! Laura update - found the option to export tree on left hand side of screen so am now trying that! lol

YOu would need to export your tree as a Gedcom to your PC, it may take 24 hours, as it will come to you as an email, save it to your desktop, then upload it to Tribal pages from there.

I love tribal pages as well. I just upgraded to the paid for version so I could export my tree to another site. I am not sure about the import time but export took about ten minutes. It is great for photos. You can have about sixty with the free site and even sort them into albums and any of your contacts can see the site free. Especially useful for my Australian relatives who don't want to join genes. I found the advertising on the free site was minimal nowhere near as intrusive as here. Tip for the day if you want paragraphs in the text type <p>. Anne P.S. Old crone that's the worst suggestion I have heard in ages.
