Hi Teresa, I do not know if you can help me in this matter but it is worth a try.. My ggggrandfather's name was Allen Murray c 1812 in Londonderry and he married Helen Kelly circa 1823 also from the Derry/Donegal area of Ireland. I know that they came Greenock, Scotland sometime after 1860 with their 5 children. I can find Helen and the children but I can not find Allen anywhere although I do know that he is buried here in Greenock. Is there any other Name that Allen would go under? I know that although his name was Allen he may have been called something else like Patrick or something. I really do not know if you can help me in this matter but would be grateful if you could help in anyway. Regards Helen

I don't know of an alternate name for Allen, but Allen could have been his second name and he was just known as 'Allen'.

Perhaps who ever registered his death might have known his first name and it was recorded as that.

If you check his children's names you might be able to see it the family followed the Irish naming Pattern...this might help you to trace Allen's Death Certificate.

Irish Naming Pattern

1st son was named after the father's father
2nd son was named after the mother's father
3rd son was named after the father
4th son was named after the father's eldest brother


1st daughter was named after the mother's mother
2nd daughter was named after the father's mother
3rd daughter was named after the mother
4th daughter was named after the mother's eldest sister
