Nudging for more interesting facts.

What a great thread. I am jealous too. Can someone give me a tip on how to find out extra information about your ancestors (apart from what is in the census). My family cant all be whiter than white, surely

Most of mine are 'ordinary' exept for one who's court case was recorded in The Times, having slashed his mothers throat with a shoe makers knife. She was 77 and blind, he was let off on the grounds of insanity. Not very fair, was it!!

One of my great grandfather's died of a heart attack while on top of a woman!! The great thing is he was 77! My Dad always said at least he died with a smile on his face. Angela

I was getting very frustrated with carpenters, plasterers, printers, etc until I found out I am very tentatively related to the boxer Henry 'splash it on all over' Cooper!! Cant wait to find a highwayman or the like though!! Fuzzy x

My great X 2 grandmother had an elder brother who killed his fiance, was found innocent on the grounds of insanity and spent the next 46 years in Broadmoor. Apart from that, they were all very ordinary - although one of them had delusions of grandeur. He said his father was a 'provisions merchant' (he was a milk carrier!) and he told my dad that he ran the docks at Tilbury (he was an assistant fireman!) Oh, and my Norfolk grandfather Jeuel shook hands with Rider Haggard, author of She and King Solomon's Mines. nell

OK, I'm related to Scottish royalty on my mother's side and am also related to Princess Eugenie (as in Napoleon) .. but I haven't traced that bit .. someone else in the family did .. however on the other hand .. my father's mother hated my mother as she didn't consider her good enough for her ickle baby boy .. and guess what .. her father was a Coal Miner .. Below Ground .. that certainly gave my mum a blurry good laugh!

OK, my ancestors were kings of Dyfed in the 10th-16th centuries, that any good? And my friend's third cousin once reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and later became Lleyton Hewitt's coach.

I've just got, stonemasons, ag.labs and miners. OH had to be different. His gt.gt. grandfather built the first pier in our town. His fathers cousin was a barrister at the Profumo trial and he represented William Joyce(Lord Haw\ Haw) when he was charged with treason. Another cousin was an actor and had bit parts in TV series such as upstairs, downstairs and it Ain't Half Hot Mum. We still get royalties from the BBC!

i have a profesional crickter called henry pallett who played with the legend W G Grace in the late 1800s...if you google his name hes there...thats the best i get Debbie

My cousin's wifes mother is related to Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hung in Britain apparently.... Oh and i have a Swiss Geilinger family on my tree, who's decendent is now a famous director for tv... Lib:))

Well, Sophia, your Ag Labs and Coalminers join my Coalminers and Stonemasons (and of course Ag Labs). I suppose we will have to pay a shilling to speak to the rest of 'em now!!

My 4great grandfather and his wife were both convicted of crimes and transported to Aust. They went on to become quite respectable and settled large amounts of land in NSW and George was even called back to England to give evidence in the Bigge commission. I have a few other convict rellies as well. My husband's cousin says that they are related to Sir Francis Drake but I am unable yet to prove it and she wont tell me or help me prove it. My granddad says that we have a relative who was an earl or duke and then went bankrupt but I can't prove that either yet. He says I have to wait until he dies to get the paperwork. My husband's 3g grandfather was in the british army and did his best to have children in as many countries as he could, which makes for interesting research. Toni

I'm pretty sure (it's so hard to find proof) that I'm a descendant of the Barons Sutton of Dudley Castle. Not only once but twice. The 2nd Baron (c.1459) is my 14th G Grandfather twice. Once is through a younger son who didn't get the Title. The second is through his grandson the 5th Baron and he's the interesting one. Although he was married and had a wife and family at the castle, he kept a mistress and had at least a dozen children by her. Even though the children were illegitimate they all married well, into important families. The descendant of the 2nd Baron married one of these children and that's how I got related twice. The daughter of this couple married an Attwood who is supposedly connected to a Thomas Attwood who was a famous Birmingham MP in the 1800s. Because all the posh folk married each other I can chuck in quite a number of Earls, Lords, Sirs etc. but I daren't add them into my tree. A cousin reckons this makes William the Conqueror our 28th G Grandad. Diana and Camilla are supposedly connected but I haven't tried to find out how.

My great, great, great uncle is a famous photographer in Cornwall his work is in Truro Museum. If anyone goes to Truro, Cornwall, I recormend people to go and see some of his work in the museum. I have some of his work and I very grateful to him for this, because without him I would have known what my great, great, great grandfather looked like. His work goes back to the end of the 1800 right to 1960. His name is Samuel John Govier, he was know as John. My great grandmother always said that she was George Hirst first cousin. George Hirst was the all round cricket player who played for Yorkshire and England. Fern -x-.

My favourite one... Stole a pig, was fined 2 shillings and spent a month in Newgate Jail. Went on to become a pillar of the community owning a Butchers Shop (Pork) and was a witness for the prosecution in a couple of cases for theft. The phrase pots and kettles springs to mind...LOL And I wont mention his father tried for murder and got off....Oh I just did... :))) Chris

Oh, I forget the possible connection to the lady who designed the Australian flag and the family rumour that one uncle was put in prison for knocking a policeman off his bicycle.
