Ian, some of these new kind of forums put me right off, where there are smileys and pictures and quotes that appear every time somebody posts anything. They give me a headache! And if we had that kind of forum, what is the betting it would be moderated? Well, some people might think that would be good, but we would suddenly have to start behaving ourselves, wouldn't we?! Kate.

Pippa Report 26 Apr 2006 15:06

Just lately I haven't posted that much as I am at a stage where I have gained loads of knowledge from reading this board. People on here have been really helpful even doing look-ups for me during their own research time which I appreciate as I know how precious it is. I try and aswer queries where I can and I have been noticing lately that a lot of queries that have been answered previously many times have been popping up but that is as a result of loads of 'new' people coming onto the site. Yes there are some fun threads because the experienced people that help others are still here helping us and lets face it why not let off a bit of steam sometimes. The general board is difficult to post on as people on there do seem to be very close and I feel like (whether rightly or wrongly) I have stumbled into a private meeting sometimes. Just to add the membership fee has been the best money I have ever spent due to help that I have received from other members.

I have never been able to understand the way you move from one message to the reply and so on, on other forums......and by the time you have done it wrong a few times you know you will never learn! I can cope here and also on The Peerage d o t c o m, but on that site you wait maybe a year for a reply!! (literally) Merry

:) I understand some of you oldies might struggle at first to understand a new forum however if you can manage a search in ancestry and make your way through thousands of pages of mistranscribed pages then I'm sure within a little time you'd manage it. I think the sheer number of people on here posting is the major problem. The system they have is fine if you only have a few members or not very many posting but when you have lots of new users and lots of old farts who sit there all day keeping up with the threads and posting replies then it proves difficult to follow the threads you are interested in if you return 10 hours later. I have seen a forum elsewhere which is the perfect answer for the researchers/genealogists on here but they never go there because we are all here fumbling about with a really badly designed board. In my oppinion they should integrate a more powerful board to GR. It would be a lot tidier and easier for all users to get to grips with. I dread to think the amount of posts i've missed that would be useful because it's so difficult to navigate and find things. Yes you probably would need a moderator or two BUT if they made it so that only the paying registered users could post here they would cut out most of the trouble in one fell swoop. Thanks for listening, Ian PS, the ageist comments were just humour and not seriously meant by the way. But you do know who you are. ;)

This board has been a great help to me. I've got further than I would have believed possible when I started all due to the help and advice of very generous people and the tips I've picked up on other threads. And don't we all need a laugh sometimes? I just wish I was witty enough to add to some of the more humourous threads! I will definitely renew. Moira.

Ian Perhaps instead of apologising at the end , maybe it would have been better to have not used a few of your terms. I check the board daily if I can and may not have the general knowledge everyone else has but using it has taught me alot. Many people these days are not computer literate whilst others learn the skill at a fantastic rate. Other forums I have found hard to negotiate because they are a subsection within a section and yes I struggled on one to attach something which I usually do with out thinking. Perhaps lightheartedness within the board keeps some of us sane but this is one board I recommend to everyone starting out because everyone is so helpful and if they wish to have a bit of banter, let them carry on, you don't have to read it. I don't have a problem reading through the board if I haven't checked it for a while and if you are stuck/missed a thread, someone always points you in the right direction ie they take the trouble to nudge it up for you which is not always a feature in other forums. Hi, everybody, Just thought I'd put my two cents worth in. I really enjoy reading the postings on Tips and Records Boards and have learned quite a bit both about genealogy and computers. I enjoy the light hearted threads too and don't see any harm in them. I can't be bothered with the other boards and have more in common with the people on tips and records. I think you are very patient with beginners in the main thank goodness so long may this continue. I seem to have trouble finding my threads again and have to search through pages of postings and if I haven;'t checked for a few days can't find them at all. What am I doing wrong apart from being a bit thick?

Fergie, To check your own threads just click on (view my threads only) click on 'all replies' to view everyones posts. Heather

Merry Report 26 Apr 2006 16:23

Fergie, When you get to the Tips Board, to find your own threads and the ones you have posted on, look for the bit that says: ''You are currently viewing ALL Threads (View Your Threads Only)'' and click the bit that says, ''(View Your Threads Only)'' Then it's easier to see the ones you are after! (when you open any threads via this route, you will have to click ''See All replies'' otherwise you will only see your own postings within each thread) Merry

The Ego Report 26 Apr 2006 16:56

Ed Barber........... Actually how much time have you spent doing lookups or spending your cash helping others? I rest my case. This site is not a service it is a cooperative ,a sort of bring a bottle party, whereby people help each other, some more than others....GR have been poncing off many of us by advertising in a way whereby a newcomer expects others to find info for them for free. There is also a records board. Perhaps you should join Damian Gevaux and complain that peole on here arent pulling their weight.

What fun would the board be without light relief? Some of the comedy can be helpful (death causes) and can also give you a break when you've been trawling for two hours, then go back and find them! Keep the laughter coming!

Hi Alter Nice to see you, though please keep the tone light. You of all people know that some people give help off board and in different ways. I get out of bed the wrong side some days and bitch about tips threads appearing on records or general - how am I expected to find them there, lol! but really appreciate a few lighter threads on this board. Luddite that I am, I like the Tips Board and the people that post on it. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the serial nudging of clusters of old Tips threads: not one or two that are pertinent to a particular query, but hordes of the things that bump newbies off page one. Rant over. Enjoy the sunshine.
