I have an old version fo Familytree Maker which I was quite happy with but am now thinking of spending some of my pennies! Will I be able to transfer what I have over to the new programme cause if not I can't bear the thought of re-entering all my bits and pieces!! Sue

Thanks Linda ... did order it ... so maybe here today ....whooooooo

Heather

Heather Report 4 May 2006 09:01

Sue, you should have no problem - I just put in my new disc and everything transferred automatically from my previous program. (Heather starts to flick through holiday brochures as she sticks another fiver in the pot) Have a look at my-history website they have a chart about upgrades etc. Cant you back up the one you already have to a cd disc first?

Sue

Sue Report 4 May 2006 09:47

Now you are being really clever!!!! I expect someone in the family can help - after raising their eyes to heaven again!!! Sue

Heather

Heather Report 4 May 2006 09:57

Sue, honestly its easy - if your program has the facility. On the 2005/6 versions (the only ones Ive had), you just bung in a writable cd into the coffee cup holder tray, go to your FTM program, click on back up and then to cd and thats it, you sit there and it tells you its done and the disc comes out and you put it somewhere safe, in case the worse should happen and the puter fails. And to treble check, I also use the family home page facility on there - (gawd the boys were impressed when I said Id made a web site!!) Again, you just click on create homepage and the program does it all for you - and you have a website on the internet with your family history.

Heather Report 4 May 2006 10:21

No Babs, Im useless, I just fumble my way through and often dont remember how I did it when I have done it! I rely on people like Peter who seems to be a ftm whiz and some of the others on here.

Ok then If you have a homepage you can easily access it,but how do you access other users homepages? I have put a few photographs onto mine, but how would i search for anything (my homepage or someone else) if for example i were to visit a friend or rellie and use a different PC. Glen

Heather

Heather Report 4 May 2006 11:03

Oh yee of little faith and equally little stature! When you do your homepage Glen, they give you an url - so you type in your website url and bingo! (though I must say you can quite often get an unavailable for some reason when you try it ). I give my addy to any genuine person who contacts me about shared ancestry. For a while you have closed access which is good, cos it gives you time to make sure there is nothing on there you dont want seen. There is an automatic mailing list for you to enter persons you want the site to be sent to. After a couple of months, I noticed I was getting people contact me through doing a search engine search for a particular surname and they had found my site. I have my 'not cold' mail addy on the front page as that filters spam and stuff so I dont get a million viagra ads going to the mail box. So I guess if you wanted to look at someone elses home page, you either ask them for the addy, or they add you to the mailing list for it or you could try a google for a particular surname and hope that it turfs out that persons home page? Glen, send me your email addy (I dont think I have it?) and we will have a trial run with my home page?

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 4 May 2006 11:29

Little stature!Little Stature!!!!! Good things come in small packages, that's what i always say anyhow. (stomps off in a huff) Glen

Heather

Heather Report 4 May 2006 11:45

All that stomping will play havoc with your turnips Glen. And anyway, I have to admit to being the Cuckoo in a Sparrows nest of my family - Gawd knows why they all had the s-a genes when I got the sturdy Viking ones. So I am in absolute agreement Glen, small men rule! (or so Napoleon, Churchill, Cromwell, Hitler, Mussolini,Caesar etc. said!)

Just to confirm peeps Viewing internet Web sites - Glen and I have now looked at each others and we were well satisfied.

When I joined Ancestry last year I paid a £1.00 for a CD of FTM. Is this a full programme or just a taster? Have any of you had the email from Ancestry with an offer for FTM + a magazine. Is this the same version. Margaret N

Heather

Heather Report 4 May 2006 21:54

Well to be honest Margaret, I think for a quid it must be just a trial version. Does it not say anything on the packaging.

Margaret

Margaret Report 4 May 2006 22:36

Just opened the packet after all this time and says Starter Pack so guess I have to buy the full version. Considering doing this as I am fed up with PAF. Thanks,. Margaret N
