Helen Report 19 Feb 2006 23:50

My gran told my mum that a vicar in the local church was her cousin. But we carn't find a marriage for his father to my gran's aunt. The vicar was called Tom E Cowx, and was born in 1903. His father was a William Frederick Cowx, all i can remember is his mpther's surname was Eaton. Now did his mother die or just leave with someone else, and his father take up with gran's aunt as though they where married. Please help solve it for me. Helen

I think the 2nd marriage Georgina found must be a different William Fairf. Cowx because he married in a different reg district miles away, and his wife in 1901 still seems to be Edith. It also makes sense that Tom would be named after his mother's maiden name rather than his father's first wife. Which is why there's no death to be found for Edith. nell

John Evans abt 1871 Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales Boarder Middlesbrough Yorkshire Beatrice Williams abt 1887 South Bank, Yorkshire, England Daughter Middlesbrough Yorkshire Caleb Williams abt 1855 Templeton, Pembrokeshire, Wales Head Middlesbrough Yorkshire Caleb Williams abt 1890 Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England Nephew Middlesbrough Yorkshire Edith Williams abt 1889 Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England Daughter Middlesbrough Yorkshire Hannah M Williams abt 1883 Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales Daughter Middlesbrough Yorkshire Margaret A Williams abt 1885 Neath, Glamorgan, Wales Daughter Middlesbrough Yorkshire Mary Williams abt 1855 PA, Pembroke Wife Middlesbrough Yorkshire Thomas J Williams abt 1887 Pontygwyth, Glamorgan, Wales Nephew Middlesbrough Yorkshire Georgina.

Now one of Caleb's daughters or Elizabeth, presumably born later, must have married either an Eaton or a Cowx - is that right? Is it your gran whose cousin was Tom Cowx, or your mum whose cousin is Tom Cowx? nell

Well, if its the right William F Cowx on the census in 1901, he's an iron, steel and metal broker! I must say that census page is the most beautifully written I've ever seen, a model to others! Without getting Tom Cowx's cert though, you can't be sure what his father was. you have nothing to go on except what your mum remembers someone else telling her. nell

Georgina Report 20 Feb 2006 00:27

Helen I think you are going to have to be patient and wait for the 1911 census to see where they all were then. The trouble is Tom could be your grans second or third cousin by marriage because in 1901 Beatrice was only 14 and there is no sign of Elizabeth who I think is more likely the one who could have married Tom. Very confusing. Georgina.
