Jack Report 11 Feb 2006 23:16

Jess, I'm new-ish to this, and I'm so pleased to have found someone offering to do lookups on the censuses for me! I'm trying to sort out details of my grandfather who was orphaned, and went to live with his uncle, but not sure when etc, or what brothers and sisters he had; so I hope you can help. His name was Edward Hardman, born 05/07/1891 in Harwood St. Pendleton, Salford (maybe listed as Manchester) His parents were Edwin and Mary Ann Flowers, don't know their DoBs. In 1901, he would either still be in Pendleton, or moved to his Uncle Ralph Hardman, who lived at Newtown, New Mills. The trouble is, half of Newtown is in Derbsyhire, and half in Cheshire, so if the census is organised by county, I realise I am asking you rather a lot!

Oops, forgot to ask if you could tell me who else was living at the same house as Edward Hardman on the 1901 census!

jack- leave it with me, will look again in the morning. Did Ralph have wife? (emma maybe?)

Jack

Jack Report 11 Feb 2006 23:42

I don't know what Ralph's wife was called, assuming he had one. I can ask my dad tomorrow, if he remembers his great-aunt's name. (After all, she would be a sort of alternate grandmother, I suppose)

Jess, have just remembered the 1881 will show Daniel seniors birth place. Right, checked same and it was Haydock, Lancashire, so guess your first find is probably the one. Can you provide fuller details from that one when you get a chance? Pity he does not seem to have been with his parents, wonder if they were dead by then. I don't suppose there was an Ann Cook in the house too, or as a neighbour? He married her at the end of Census year.

Jess, Thanks for doing that for me. I suspect that the younger 'Edwin' listed in 1901(born 1892 approx) is probably my Granddad 'Edward' born 1891. I assume that my great Grandma Mary Ann must have died between 1891 and 1901. My thinking on the Edward/Edwin confusion is that its unlikely that great Granddad would have sent Edward off to live with his uncle, while keeping Edwin (just 1 or 2 yrs younger) at home. Thanks again Jack
