Hi Jess. I'm on the Robinson track again. There is a James Robinson who was 47 on the 1901 Census. He was born in Portsea and in Portsmouth on the Census as a labourer in the Dockyard. Can you tell me who he was with as I haven't got any of his family yet. Thanks.

Steve Report 5 Jun 2005 11:16

Hi Jess, Looking for: - Charles Ashburn Pester b.1860ish Portsea/Portsmouth, Hamphire. Occupation: Seaman RN (Stoker). Spouse: Ellen Sarah Ann Bawden b.1873 in Devonport, Devon. Married in 1885 in Devonport, Devon. I have him in 1861/1871/1881 census returns, so only need 1891 and 1901 (he may be at sea in 1901 so his wife will be at home). Also - William Pester b.1842ish in Devonport, Devon. Need from 1871 onwards please. Do not know much about this person except matching entries on 1851 census (8 years old) and 1861 census (in Navy Boy 1st Class) after 1861 everything is sketchy as not many entries are him. Also Thomas Pester b.1850ish in Devonport, Devon. I need him in 1881 onwards. Some conflict of ages/areas etc in census, trying to find right Thomas Pester. Seems like all sons of Thomas Ashburn Pester (Charles, William and Thomas's father) were Royal Navy Seaman particularly Stokers. I think Thomas married in 1876 (Seems like him). He married what seems like Elizabeth Sarah Ann Welch. Census has him as a baker in 1871 census aged 21 with parents and siblings (definitely right person), away at sea in 1881 (with with still at home) and some confusing later entries for census (reverting from seaman to baker etc). All these entries I just need you to clarify and make sure I'm not going crazy and following wrong people/places. Thanks Jess if you can help me. If so could you check all BMD for all individuals you may come across in searching. Many thanks Steve

Hi Jess, Thanks. Who do you mean by this: - 1891 all these Pester are in the same household, will attempt to sort them for you Pester, Charlotte Lucy abt 1885 Stonehouse, Devon Or Devonshire Daughter Stoke Damerel Devon *Pester, Ella B A abt 1890 Devonport, Devon Or Devonshire Daughter Stoke Damerel Devon *Pester, Ellen A abt 1872 Devonport, Devon Or Devonshire Wife Stoke Damerel Devon Pester, Henry Wm Andrew abt 1890 Devonport, Devon Or Devonshire Son Stoke Damerel Devon Pester, Thomas James abt 1883 Scotland Son Stoke Damerel Devon *Pester, Charles A abt 1863 Portsea, Hampshire / Hantshaving Head Stoke Damerel Devon *Pester, Charles G H A abt 1888 Devonport, Devon Or Devonshire Son Stoke Damerel Devon Pester, Charlotte abt 1863 Scotland Wife Stoke Damerel Devon 1881 Ellen Pester abt 1845 Hartland, Devon, England Wife No 5 Adelaide Lane, East Stonehouse, Devon, England William Pester abt 1842 Devonport, Devon, England Head No 5 Adelaide Lane, East Stonehouse, Devon, England * given that her name is Ellen i assume she is the Ellen, without a husband in 1891 in the mixed up group with a son named Henry W. I believe that William married an Ellen (just been through my Pester records), but so did Charles. I'm a bit mixed up to be honest, the family in 1891 are transcribed as Hinron or something like that and on ancestry it says pester.

Yes thats them on 1861. They are on 1871 transcribed as Gaster. Hope this helps. Steve

The Bag

The Bag Report 5 Jun 2005 13:29

So are they all still together in 1871, if not who is mis-transcribed as Gastor? <- would have been useful to know.... where is william in 1861

Steve

Steve Report 5 Jun 2005 13:42

Hi, All the Pesters (transcribed as Gaster) are present in 1871 census. William isn't. He is in the RN as Boy 1st Class. This vessel is called Simoom/Simon in the District Simon (not sure about transcription). This will is in 1901 census as a Pauper patient aged 58 (about 1842/43) born in Plymouth, Devon. He had a wife called Ellen. Steve
