Jenny- i still cant find them but feel that something isn't quite adding up here - if this Thomas and louisa (the one I found in 1891)had a daughter that died last week how old was she when she died? Even if she was 90, that would make her born 1915, and the first born was born by 1881 - quite a span for any woman to have been bearing children. have a bit of a think - are those 1891 the right ones? ~Jess~

David Report 11 Apr 2005 10:07

Hi Jess Re George and Caroline Sherriff. I think Caroline Mary is the first wife, Mary the second. Age of Caroline in 1871 would be about 39 and George anything from 47. I have come across other census' where the ages are up to 5 years out. As well as incorrect ages on marriage certs. Not been able to find a marriage cert for either. Both 1861 and 1881 give George's occupation as Hawker, but his son's marriage cert gives it as General Dealer. Thanks Jess, regards david

Christopher - apologies for that. can you post full details of this new couple The Madden family in question lived in Leeds. I know Mary Madden was born in 1881 and was registered as living at 6 Wheeler Row. Her parents John Madden and Ann Madden (nee Farrell) I have no idea where they were born. I believe they would appear from 1871 census in Leeds and I would believe they came from Ireland as all the other Maddens did. Could you look from 1871 to 1901 to confirm address and children born to John and Ann Madden.

Hi Jess, thanks again for the look up. The Yates Yates you found in the 1891 and 1901 (family of) are definitely him. Is the one in Haslingden the only one in the 1871. I have looked in the 1881 and he is there again along with 5 others of the same name!!! but in different places. Imaginative lot when it came to naming children weren't they? Gloria
