We have 2 computers side by side in the dining area - but everyone wants the best one. There's a queue system - after you says one - no I'm next another and there's a fight to get on. (big household). When hubby comes past he looks at screen and its either genealogy or football on there. However when I'm alone I'm on for hours (doing hubby's line as can't get past first base with mine). Sometimes into the small hours. Yes last summer went up to Scotland and tried to visit as many places on his tree as possible - unfortunately graveyards didn't have any stones (too poor). Does anyone have the problem of too much information in their head and not knowing where to go with it? Anyway this link may cheer someone up. http://www.riversongs(.)com/Flas/today.swf

Julie, My husband has now got himself a second computer and has put it in our office next to mine - That is ok but he hasn't got an internet connection on his. Trouble is, he has just sent for some sort of lead 'thingy' (I'm not very technical) and when it arrives he is going to link up the 2 so he can use the internet at the same time ???????????? Is this something simple to do, as he also is not a Computer Whizz ?? I have the terrible feeling that he is going to blow everything up and I will lose all my research. What do you think - should I stop panicking ?? Dea. x

Seasons Report 30 Mar 2005 10:31

No it should be alright both ours are linked and we now even got a wireless thingy for the laptop. (too fiddly for me) Unfortunately it still hasn't alleviated the problem of everyone wanting the same computer. All my links are on the best computer and it goes faster (due to being a better computer not connection problems) has a flat screen and its also best for the games graphics etc. so there's still a conflict of interests.

Thanks Julie, You have made me feel a 'bit' better but we can only wait and see. He is famous for doing those little 'two-minute' jobs which usually manage to take him several days !! Dea x.

Dea, god your in real trouble, youve become addicted to the GN drug, theres no hope for you im afraid except 'COLD TURKEY' being kept tied to a bed with chains, in a room where you can get at at pc. when the headaches start you will have to stop pulling your hair out, dont peek out of the window at the pc in the house on the other side of the road. but dont worry time will heal all things and you will slowly get better, but REMEMBER 'dont ever go bck to GC' you will always sbe in denial, and eventually it will be necessary for you to join 'GC ANNONAMOUS' dont worry. TED.

Doesn't it feel good when you know that you belong, that you're not the only one who suffers from the genealogy addiction.....Luckily my hubby is useless with computers but boy does he moan about the time I spend on the computer. So when I'm home (I do wish I didn't have to work) in between research I rush around doing wifely things and because the other week he was going to cite the computer as the cause of a possible divorce.....I leave a piece of paper with one of his ancestors names on it casually lying around and when he's about to moan again I casually add that I could go and do a bit of research for him,it 's worked everytime so far!!!!!!.Luckily his ancestors are so easy to unearth ,unlike mine.. Devious I know but it works for me. It's my day off so inbetween a bit of housework I'll be doing a lot of searching. Elaine

Hi Last year in my EYFHS members book, the following poem was published: The Genealogists Disease Warning: This condition is very contagious to adults Symptoms: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates and places Patient has a blank expression Sometimes deaf to spouse and children Has no taste for work of any kind except feverishly looking through records at libraries and record offices Has compulsion to write letters Swears at the postman when he doesn’t leave mail Frequents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins and remote, desolate country areas Makes secret night calls and long internet sessions Hides away phone bills from spouse Mumbles to self Has a strange faraway look in their eyes Treatment: Medication is useless, the disease is not fatal but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend family history workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines and be given a quiet corner in the house where he or she can be alone The unusual nature of this disease is, the sicker the patient gets, the more he or she enjoys it! I found it quite amusing Leanne

Ooh good I'm not alone! I spend all evening with laptop on, browsing and putting random words into search engines in the hope of finding a new website with some snippet of useful genealogical info. Husband has given up in disgust and got himself his own laptop........he now e-mails me from across the room! :) Sue

well all I can say is that you have really understanding hubby's mine just sees it as a weekness, and can't understand anything about the family thing... but I keep going, stuff him (wish I could!) I have promised myself to keep away for a month or more because I was sleeping in the spare room just to be able to log on in the middle of the night (wireless)... and check.. AND, I use to go to sleep trying to dream out the numbers or dates and deaths, and hoping that in the morning it would all become clearer.... hahah so funny. But hey.. !!!! hhahaa

Hi everyone, My partner is getting worried about me, sitting here till 4 am + every night/morning, then I can't get up till midday. One night I got into bed as he got out for the early shift. I blame it all on his snoring, and my fibromylagia, say it's the only way to relax before I can sleep at all, but now I've found this message board I'm even more hooked. Great to find there are loads of like minded folk out there, we're perfectly normal, just extra sociable and nosey! Wish I could find time to catch up on all my videoed progs. as well, the pile is stacking up. Have a good time everyone. Liz

Yes, we are all quite real - and so were our dead people when they were still alive!! Perhaps there is an organisation that we should join like Alcoholics Anonymous where we can all stand up and say 'My name is **** and I am an anorak'.

Hi there everyone, Having just read all through the replies, its great to know I am not alone. Luckily I have a very understanding hubby and he does not mind one bit, maybe because it keeps me off his back. Anyway I am really enjoying pulling skeletons out of the cupboards, tracing both our families. Happy hunting everyone. Anita xx

What worries me about all this is that I started this thread over a month ago and I have got worse, not better. Hubby is still worried, the dust lies even thicker - can't see out of the windows now and the washing is piling up again! The trouble is - I don't really care - I am 'hooked' ! Where will it all end?
